I am out of my job come tomorrow but I have budgeted myself for the next couple of months for the tank. I will be ordering a new 400w bulb and replacement cartridges for the ro/di. Including these items I have $600 to spend at the moment. I have plenty of food and new test kits. I was thinking about adding another pump and sea swirl but I am thinking about just keeping it going at this time. Don't want to miss anything important.

If you're out of a job I'd think you have more important stuff to keep the money for. I'd only do what is needed to keep the tank going. I wouldn't suggest major upgrades at this time.

I agree. Save your money on the major upgrades, and you can keep the reef going longer if you can't find a replacement income as quickly as you hope/expect.

I have known for sometime that I would not have a job so I have been preparing my self and my tank for this. I would like to buy things I would need to keep it going like food additives any type of replacements for my current equipment. You are right about backing off on any major upgrades but I would also like buy things that will allow me to keep it as maintanence free while I go back to school and work part time. Possibly make things a little more automated. Although $600 is not alot of money I would like to use it towards something every reef should have to keep it going.

Some of the things I currently have are

2 hundred watt heaters
test kits
ph meter
ro/di w/ meter
400w halide
Bakpak
30 gal refugium
mag7 pump to 1/2 sea swirl
2 hagen powerheads
ground probe

What would you put it towards? How about a top off system? Maybe automatic feeder?

You might want to consider taking it down until you can give it the time it needs. Or do something smaller / cheaper - 20 gallon nano reef for example.

Based on the info you provided of your existing setup (umm that would be none right?) How can any of us recommend anything other than hold onto your cash.

Well, you could give it to me for safe keeping...

I'd skip the second SS. $600 bucks can go a long way as far as just maintaing the tank is concerned. Don't blow it, otherwise you'll be showing up at neighbors houses to borrow a cup of salt!

I think what I'd do is get a Plankton Culture Manual, look up some DIY culture stations and go through the learning curve of how to make you own greenwater, rotifers, brine shrimp etc. (This is what I think my next move is going to be.)

Since I've turned this into a post about me, here's what else I'm wanting to do... I've already got an IV bag, so I'm going to hang this over my sump and get my evaporation/drip rate dialed in so that I can start dosing limewater.

Do you have a refractometer yet?

Reefland,

I guessing by this comment you are looking for the size of the tank. It is a 50gal with monthly 20gal water change (no additives except occasional alk or cal). If you would like additional info other than the equipment I already listed, please let me know.

Pojohnny, that is an excellent idea and thanks for the name of a book. I am also thinking of setting up a top off system for water.

"The International Bank of Monkeyboy", are you insured? What are your interest rates :D

I am going to skip the second ss and other major equipment upgrades.
Anymore ideas like Pojohnny's?
