:x I noticed that on one of my live rocks there is what seems to look like cyno, it is a dark red color with some bubbles in it, the only place that i have it is on one rock, it looks like its fuzy and it looks like there is some hair algea as well on this small patch on the rock. i was thinking of taking this rock and chucking it, but when i try to do that i noticed that my feather duster was somehow atached to the rock, i tried to detach the featherduster, but it seemed like i was ripping some sort of coocun with a worm inside?? I dont know if this is part of the feather duster, but it freaked me out!! So i decided to put the rock back in the water.

What should i do???? I dont want this cyno crap to take over my tank!
Is it to late?
What can i use to kill cyno with?
Should i take the rock out and try to peel this wierd worm of the rock? or should i sacrifice the feather duster along with the rock, and if i do that will that eliminate the cyno from growing?

And my last question is does cyno kill fish?

Thanks!!
GF

Siphon it out, this act also as nutrient export. Do so whenever you sees them. Don't worry too much if some subtrate got siphoned out along with it too.

No, cyno doesn't kill fish.....directly. You will be lucky if any fish is willing to eat cynobacteria.

Find a flexible vinyl tubing (eg. 3/4" diameter, commonly sold at most LFS), long enough to reach from bottom of tank, to buckets on the carpet. Start sucking on the out of tank end to create suction, water will flow out naturally from the tank afterwards due to atmospheric weight.

If you happened to gulp mouth full of water, it's OK, full of minerals and sodium for your body, or take it as mouth rinse.

How do you usually do water change?

I guess i have already been doing that! I use a gravel vacum when i do my water changes, it has a long cup looking thing at the end.
Will this cyno come right off the rock without me scrubbing it?, and will it be ok if some of the cyno is floating in the water, while i am doing this?

Thanks

Cynos are naturally occuring for most tanks. Unless one has prolonged history of excess nutrients, cyno bloom usually don't last for more then a couple weeks. During those times, it's ugly as hell to look at, but "properly maintained" tanks will get through it in no time.

A little floating around in the water is just fine. I used to peel off these cynos from my refugium walls and just rubs it off between my fingers. Kinda fun doing it.

Found that adding a half teaspoon of Mrs. Wages Pickling lime to my top off about twice a week made a difference and I don't get it any more.

This is what we have done quite a few times, and it worked for us. If you will shut the lights off for 2 days (a storm on the reef) and at the same time put a little activated carbon in your filter and change it every 3 or 4 days about 4 or 5 times it should take care of the problem. Also a good skimmer is a big plus during and afterwards for keeping it down. Take care Terry

Won't turnning the lights off for a couple of days hurt the corals?
And what if i dont have a filter to put carbon in. I only have a CPR BAK PAK IIR Protien Skimmer.

Thanks

Nope...most likely they won't even notice...

I have a BakPak II also...I put the carbon in a filter bag and stuff it into the right side, the outflow column...

I would not turn lights off for more than 2 days, but this has worked for us a number of times. We got this information off of this fine board a while back. As far as the carbon you could put some in a bag and put in front of a water flow in your tank. Take care, Terry
