How can one buy animals that have not been caught in the wild? The reason being that the methods used for capture are often not good for reef ecology.

Thanks.

Lots of fish are captive raised: Clownfish, dottybacks, bangai cardinals, seahorses. In the case of clownfish it's easier to find captive than wild. ffexpress.com has a section of tank raised fish. They catch them as planktonic larvae and then raise them in tanks.

You have to take a companies word for it. It just depends who you are dealing with.

Do a search for "Captive Raised" or "Captive Bred" and you will come up with tons of information. Unfortunately most of the species that I want are not yet captively bred.

I wish there were a link to a list of current captively bred and also captively reared fish species so that in planning my next tank I could select mostly captive reared or bred fish. In addition to lessening the impact on natural reefs, captive bred fish are much heartier and many times more colorful due to selective breeding at the hatcheries.

To my knowledge, only anemonefish (Clown fish), some other damsels (I have a pair that spawn), Pseudochromis are currently captively bred. Many tangs are captively reared (which has little to no negative effect on natural reefs)

If anyone has a list to captively bred/reared fish, please let me know.
