Where can I learn the difference between SE and DE bulbs and their pros/cons? I did a search on this site but couldn't find one post with all the answers. Anyone have any links or info? and is HQI just another name for DE? Thanx. I know nothing about lighting.

I don't know if you can find one place with all the answers. Read all the posts you can find.

HQI is often, in common usage, the same as DE, but this is actually incorrect. Len knows all about this, mabye he will post and clear it up or link us to the recent thread that covered it.

I am a big fan of DE lights in mini pendants. Since they come with a UV shield they are difficult to splash or brush against by accident. I like the color of the bulbs, I like the brightness of the light for lower wattage, and I like the lower electrical cost.

At this point I think it comes down to which you like better, as they both will do the job.

How about SE bulbs on an HQI ballast, you get the best of both worlds. I suggest this because I've used both.

Golfish,
Nice tank but I can see your tank goes blue to green to blue from left to right! :D
I didn't know SE bulbs can be powered by HQI ballast. Are those 400w or 250w? I like SE cause you have a greater range to choose from. I'm switching to 250w SE E-ballast soon.

I have an PFO dual HQI ballast (250W) and run one DE bulb on the left side in a pendent and one SE bulb on the right side in a reflector. I don't really think the DE is necessary based on my results of coral growth and coloration. Both sides grow and look great these days. Since things are going well, I am trying not to disturb things too much so I am sticking with the DE on the left and the SE on the right.

See my website for pictures of the installation.
