Coralshrimp,,
Are the pictures After your water change??
How big a change did you do??
Looks like you need another 10 gallon change (looks like about a 30 or 40 gallon tank)
Also- If you have any means of mechanical filtration- change the filters about every 10 minutes or so.
I would also clean the skimmer about every hour too.
If your skimmer stops skimming- don't laugh- but putting a scant 1/2 tsp of egg whites into the tank- will start it up skimming like crazy again for you. (old tip that works)
steve, are you serious? i never know with you... 8O
flameangel, yes - these pics were taken just after the water change. it is a 40 gallon and i did a 10 gallon water change. i put a new filter in the aquaclear pump and i added the carbon filter to my old biowheel canister. you think i need to change even more water??
Better only do another 5 gallon water change.
That will help, but anymore may start a cycling thing.
Change your filters every 10 minutes (rinse them out good if you dont have spares)
And keep the skimmer skimming.
well, the water is almost clear again. thank goodness.
i just have one more question for naesco - or anyone else who might know - how long should i leave the airstone going? can i remove it once the water has cleared up?
FWIW, Caulerpa go into sexual reproduction never seem to hurt anything in my tank, just clownded it for a short while. I do have a tank that is more than 10 times in size your tank. If you have an skimmer, your tank should be OK (Oxigen is not going to be low with a skimmer going)
just for future reference, should this happen again, should i do the same procedure? i only ask so i don't freak out again.
hopefully, this thread will go into the books as reference material for someone else who has the same experience and doesn't know what the heck is happening. in case any of you are interested, the tank has cleared up quite nicely. wouldn't even know there was a "disaster" yesterday - save for the bare rock where my caulerpa used to be. *sigh*
Hi Coralshrimp,,
Glad your tank is back to normal.
Best thing to do if you have Caulerpa in your tank,
Is to watch it closely for any signs that some of the branches are starting to go "transparent".
And they WILL do this periodically.
If so- pinch the branches off and discard immediately.
If you miss the signs and this happens again (hope not),
Do a 25% water change -keep your skimmer running and change all mechanical filtration numerously.
Good luck !!
Mine did this also just last week. Tank was crystal clear when I walked out of the room...came back literally 5 minutes later and the tank was totally green. I knew it was the caulerpa since this has happened to me before. I did a water change and ran carbon. Don't know if anyone suggested it yet, but you may want to run some carbon. Good luck.
