Hi Greg, I have no experience with the Hamilton pendants, but in my research most people said they did not disperse light as well as other pendants. However, I did DIY a 150 HQI pendant with a 10K ushio, and that bulb is simply the best I have ever seen! That, with VHO actinics is the best lighting combo I have ever come accross. Go for it!
Entacmaea,
I think you have the hamiltons mixed up with the pfo mini pendants. I have a hamilton 250 hqi d/e pendant and the light spread on it is excellent. People have complained about the spread of the pfo mini pendant due to the small nature of its reflector. My Hamilton slim profile pendant has great spread and covers a 36in long tank. I totally recommend it. Hth.
Hmm... I know the low profile Hamilton pendant you are talking about, and have heard the same complaints about it, but I am glad you like it! It probably has a great deal to do with the mounting height, as well as reflector design. I swear by the bulbs though 8)
I really like the light they put out but...
I have one thats about 5 years old and it is getting awfull loud! The buzzing from the ballast seems to be getting louder or I am paying attention to it more and more. Also there is a peice of UV Glass that you must remove when changing the light bulb and cleaning that is pretty difficult to remove after a few years. and lastly cleaning of the glass for clarity of light can be difficult because the unit is pretty heavy. I have to use a ladder and I have to turn over the fixture ( wich is suspended from the ceiling) and clean the glass off about once every 2 weeks.
In order to keep the glass as clean as possible I have it suspended about 8 inches from the surface
I still think its a great light and looks good over the tank
