I'm wondering what kind of filter (if any) do I need for my Nikon Coolpix 995 to take close-up macro shots of corals? Is a tripod needed and which settings do you usually use?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Ermin,

I tripod is very useful for taking macro shots. Other than that you don't really need anything else. I do have a Tiffen +17 closeup lens but that is used only for extreme closeups, like a couple of inches. It allows the camera to focus at a closer range than it normally would. I use the full auto in macro mode. I turn off all pumps in the tank and wait for the corals to stop moving and for all the tiny bubbles to dissipate. Position the camera so that it's looking slightly down on the coral. This will prevent your tank lights from washing out the pic. It takes a lot of practice to get really good pics but since you're not having to pay for the film then just experiment with different settings and snap away.

I put my 995 in manual mode and set the ISO to 800 so I can hand hold the camera. I have taken some great closeups free hand. Just make sure you are in the close up mode in manual.

I have the 880, but i find the A setting to be the best and then to just measure the white balance once for the tank, the auto sometimes made the pictures yellowish.
