Charles,

Here's a page that has jerky/laggy scrolling on my computer:

www.advancedaquarist.com/issues/mar2002/feature.htm

I discovered what the problem is. I run my computer at a resolution of 1600x1200. When I reduce it to 1280 or less, the jerky scrolling is gone.

Still its strange how this doesn't happen on other webpages.

UPDATE: Its happening at lower resolutions too, nevermind. It was only okay that one time. It seems when I scroll through a webpage, my CPU usage goes up to 100%. I can't figure out why either. It's in the 90's on other webpages, which is still way too damn high. I'm going to reboot and see what happens.

UPDATE again: Didn't fix it. Maybe my computer is screwed. Other computers here at the office are having similar problems but not as severe. Strange. Maybe I'll upgrade my Internet Explorer.

Chris, possible silly question here.....

Had all of the images finished loading before you began to scroll down?

Weird, Chris. Article you picked is one of the few I didn't work on putting together but I'll try to see what the issue is. You encountering it anyplace else besides the march feature?

All the images were finished loading before I began scrolling, yes. The jitter appears to have stopped after upgrading to IE 6. I was using IE 5.0 before.

Charles, it was happening on pretty much every page that had images on it, not just the one I mentioned. I think that AA is simply not IE 5.0 friendly.

Seems to be fixed now, and it appears it was a browser issue. Sorry to bother you guys with this.

No worries. One thing I'm sure of, AA is IE 5.0 friendly. IE 5.0 is one of the browsers I used when building

I would like to see a monthly or bi monthly detailed biotope suggestion bringing together corals from similar niches requiring similar conditions and fish and inverts that match. Specifically mangrove, cold water, lagoon, deepwater, reef crest, back reef, reef slope environments. Even w/in these there are more specific microhabitats. As a bonus, you could give incentive for folks to set up aquariums following the guidelines and hold long term contest w/ grand prizes for the best tank.

I would also love to see some in depth freshwater articles.

One point of note, the link that Chris provided is nealy 2.5MB of total download. Although I haven't had the displeasure of using dial-up in ages, I can't imagine how long it would take to download that page. Just something to consider for the 80% of the world that doesn't have broadband.

Believe me, we are well aware of that. Eric Borneman's feature article came with over 60 images and tables. We made the call this time 'round that the readers would want to look at the images as they read the article and not have to open a separate page and go back and forth. Eric does a good job of referring to the photos and tables as the reader moves through the article. We probably won't run articles this big on a regular basis.

We also broke Eric's article down into three pages, instead of using just one. Imagine if you will how much material we are talking about here - 2.5meg * 3 = 7.5 meg!

That's why I had to say...this March Issue is a WHOPPER!

Cheers

FWIW, I've said the same thing.

Well, the 2.5MB was definitely not an issue, since my office uses T1.

I know this has been mentioned before, is there anything currently in the works for a PDF version of Advanced Aquarist? I think it would make a great way to archive and print this valuable information.

Steve,

Your request is near and dear to my heart. However, the bottom line for me is quality information. The more successful the aquarist, the fewer dead animals, the more traded and aquacultured animals, and ultimately the smallest impact on the environment. The day may come when we use our stock to repopulate wild reefs.

We will have to look into the practical aspects of a PDF version.

Heh, I've thought about making my own .pdf file in the interim so I can archive it on my system for future reference. I would second the vote for a downloadable .pdf as well.

I would like to see a regular column along the following lines .....

Species of the month.......

a short informative column about a different coral/fish/invertabrate each month with its basic care requirements.

Food sources
Lighting
Water flow
Captive propagation avaialablity and methods
Compatability

This would aid me in making selections for my tanks

thx

Rich-n-poor: Good idea!
icon_smile.gif

Terry and James: Rich-n-poor's suggestion might actually fit along nicely with the course requirements from MACO2 w/ Eric Borneman last year. According to the course requirements, one of our final projects was to write up a detailed report on a specific genus/species of coral and this information was going to be posted onto Reefs.org's library. I have no idea what has become of these reports or if reefs.org has changed their mind about posting them to their library. Maybe someone could look into that and these reports could be used for the online magazine?

That is a great idea! So far, Eric hasn't passed on the Course Project information from MACO2 but I will ask him about it when he gets back in town. We had about 60 students in that class...so wouldn't it be great if we could have 60 individual "Coral Reports?"

Thanks for the reminder Shane.

The site is great, A+ in my book. If it is possible I would like to know more about reef keeping techniques in other parts of the world.

I think you are doing just great.
It was nice to see you enter the general reefkeeping discussion from time to time. Please continue to do so.
I would like to see our experts take a stand in support of the USL or unsuitable species list.
Than have experts comment on their progress and ideas for care in the advanced forum but not before the USL is in place.
Thank you
