creeping gorgonian? Never heard of a creeping gorgonian but those are some nice green star polyps in the pic.

The clam appears to be a Maxima but I'm no expert.

A shot of the shell on the clam would be helpful to ID it. Most likely Tridacna maxima or T. crocea. Coloration reminds me of a lot of croceas I've seen, that would be my gut reaction.

awesome DIY work!

looks like a crocea, but if you can take a pic of the shell, then i can say for sure.

how can you tell the diff btw creeping gargs and star polyps, briarium etc.?

I would say that that is an encrusting gorgonian..doesn't really look like star polyps.[/QB]

That's wierd because that looks EXACTLY like what I believe to be green star polyps in my tank... but of course I could have been wrong for the two years they been in there! They spread like crazy is all I know!

Well lets see, I am looking at Erick Bornemans book right now and he says for Briareum asbestinum (encrusting form) "the polyps are typically brown or occasionally greenish. The mat or rind is usually purplish gray." I will leave it up to you guys who can tell colors better than I to see if this info helps.

IMO I believe it to be Briareum, following J. Sprung's book Corals A Quick Reference Guide.

Anyhow great job on the MH lights. When will you have mine ready to be picked up?

I have exactly the same Star Polyps in my tank. In the UK everyone calls them Mettalic Green Xenia, just to add to the confusion. I actually think there weeds, they grow like em anyways. Damn things swamped this coral i had growing out of my LR before i could even identify it, the worst bit is it was flourecent BLUE AAAHHHHHHHH.

well then encrusting garg it is!!

i have 4 types of "star polyps" in my reef. 3 of which have a puple base, so i'll assume they really are "star polyps" and one has a light colored base, with tan/green polyps, so i guess that is an encrusting garg. it also displays a different growth pattern.while it still does "creep" it also forms nodular growth or finger/branches if you will.

geez, you learn something everyday!

I still think it's a green star (pachyclavularia sp.), all the briarium's i've seen don't have that deep green color or such a dark colored mat. Looks like a crocea to me but i think davelin may be right
