I use Coralife because I get a neat T-shirt with every 150G bucket.

That's the only reason. I have used virtually every type of salt mix over the years with no noticable differences between all brands. I go cheapest, never had any problems, ever.

The fact that one dissolves slower is not an issue IRT how it performs. It is virtually impossible to accurately rack and stack salt-mixes, given the numerous variations in tank parameters; initial fresh water quality; filtration, bio-load, etc,etc and further by comparing one one hobbyists tank from another. Heck, even your own tank's parameters can change daily. A lab test can show the breakdown of the composition of the mixes, but is not necessarily an indication of good vs bad when it is in YOUR aquarium. Many of the respondents to this poll said they could tell no difference between salts (with their tank and inhabitants). I would venture to say that would be the norm. Remember, in triple blind taste tests of beer, "Old Milwawkie" was judged the best tasting. Why, because the testers were not influenced by (1) Price or (2) Advertising Hype. I think a lot of our choosing salts are base on these same factors.
After all, how can a $1.50 six pack of beer (OMW) be better than a $3.00 six pack of Bud.

dukecola, the T's are pretty cool.

I had been using ReefCrystals on my 120. I recently set up a 360, to share the same sump. (increased water volume) Anyway, when filling the 360 I needed ALOT of salt. So, I went with Corallife. In the new tank I put "homemade" LR in it. (concrete and crushed oyster shell....and yes I let it cure for 8 weeks doing water changes weekly) After about a week a brown "dust" algae appeared on the rock and sand (SouthDown). It could easily be blown off with a PH, but would return. It never appeard in the 120 at all! I was told that it was the salt, but don't buy that story. Any ideas?

In the 2 different batches of IO I tried, I got a white precipitate, using my RO/DI water. I tried Aquarium Systems Reef Crystals, and got no precipitate, and have used it ever since.

Used IO for years but just bought a bucket of Deep Ocean Premium Reef Formula from a LFS. Never heard of this salt before. The rep happened to be in the store at the time and said it has been around 15+ years. Made by Energy Savers, who makes Coralife, but had been marketed to public aquariums until recently. Of course he isn't about to bad-mouth his own product but the price was right and it seems to be working fine so far.

Used to use IO until I started finding all sorts of tiny black pieces of whatever in the bottom of my mixing containers from the salt. Also left a residue on everything in the container. Now I use MEI. Works great for me.

Naso,
It's not the salt. New tank syndrome. Are you using RO/DI?
