Hey guys,

My dad is looking into replacing the CC in his 80 gal with DSB. Today, I decided to stop by Home Depot (tigard) and try to find southdown, but couldn't find it. When I asked an employee if they had southdown, he just looked at me like i was crazy.

Only sand they had was "All-Purpose" sand. Where can I find southdown sand in Oregon? Can I use "all-purpose" sand?

Sorry dude, they only sell that stuff at HD's on the east coast and some in the midwest. You are SOL, man, just like the rest of us west coasters.

Zip_Case, I feel your pain. I tried getting this stuff nearly a year ago. Went to a local HD down here in Salem and asked about Southdown brand playsand.

Blank stares.
"We get all our sand from the quarry in Portland." No matter what I said, they were not interested in getting this stuff for me.

I happened to talk to someone down in Corvalis on another board. They actually got the HD in Albany to order them a small pallette of the stuff...but it was such a hassle for the store that he doubts they would ever do something like that again.

I know there have been enough people who pooled together in SoCal who have pooled together the money to get quite a few palettes shipped out there. If enough people in the NW were interested, maybe we could get something like that going.

Until then...it's $20 for 20 lbs. I'm afraid.

A friend in Idaho Falls, Idaho ordered a small palet of Southdown directly, and with shipping he was in $0.50/pound. Was convenient for me since I was able to pick some up from him last summer. Otherwise, oolitic sand will do the trick. When I lived in Bend, Oregon I ordered some Carib Sea sugar sized (oolitic) from a guy in Utah (www.coralsandclams.com), but think with shipping it was still around $0.70/pound. Have since moved to Utah and haven't bought any for a long time. Good luck finding the stuff or a suitable alternate,
