A new reef store is trying to open in downtown Kenosha called Fishy Biz, but because of the nature of the lighting on his tanks the city of Kenosha will not issue him an electrical permit. He has been fighting the city for a month and a half to get this through. As far as I understand it, he is running open wires to his endcaps for VHO as do all of us, but the city won't allow it without it being run through conduit. If he were to do that condensation could build inside the conduit and fry the whole system. Please lets all band together and try to figure out how to help Keith open his doors! Does anyone know a way around this, or maybe a loophole that would allow him to get the permit? Thanks all! If you know how to help email me or post here and I'll give you his cell number.

In Illinois, it's against code to have wiring not in conduit, I would think that if that's the obstacle to his wiring there, there's not a whole lot he can do about it. Some states will allow a certain type of exposed wiring, but it's much thicker, and it looks like industrial size extension cord. The alternative for him might be to have junction boxes all over his store off of an electrical line and convert the wiring from his lights to electrical cord with plugs. However, this would not account for his ballasts. Also, anything under 6 feet here in Illinois (I think it's 6, might be 4 or 5) can go in flexible conduit.

Could he get away with just running conduit to a box behind all the tanks and wire out from there with that thick ass white stuff? Or does it have to be to within a certain distance? He said it had to do with Kenosha not understanding endcaps or something, so maybe they expect conduit all the way up to the endcaps? Is it me or would that be absolutely insane?
