Anyone use this product? Like it? Dislike it? Nowhere on the bottle does it say to refrigerate. Do I need to? How long does it keep? How does it compare to DT's?

I have been alternating between that and Microvert and all don't have any complaints.

I have never refridgerated it since it doesn't indicate the need and I figured it wasn't at the store (or warehouse or anywhere in between for that matter). The shelf life a good question, never really thought about it.

In the comparison to DT's, it looks to be about the same acording the the microscopic pics MattM posted a while back. Phytoplankton Pics

ernie,
I use phtolpex along with coral accel, and alterante the accel with the micro vert. I use a syringe and target feed according to the directions. It appers to be working fine for myself. As for comparing to dts I looked at the pics that were posted not to long ago and it seemed that phytoplex was somewhat comparable. I am actually thinking about swithcing when I runout to something that is a one part product. The guy at the lfs is pushing white snow by two lil fishes....

I have heard that it is 99.99999% water and the other 0.000001% is unknown.

Ernie,
I use the Phytoplex, but I can't honestly determine whether or not it's making any difference. I keep mine in the fridge, just to be on the safe side.
Haven't been able to get DT's up here until recently, but I plan on ordering some when I run out of the Phyto.

Kent's Phytoplex contains a preservative (EDTA most likely) to keep the product from going bad. As long as the bottle isn't stored in the back of a '78 Pinto in Las Vegas in the summer I don't think you need to worry about shelf life before you finish the bottle.

As for the cost difference, Phytoplex is cheaper, and easier to ship, and store, however LIVE Phytoplankton is IMO always preferred and more nutritious. Phytoplex sells for about $1.03 an ounce, while DT's sells for about $1.33 an ounce.

So the cost difference is not that huge, few bucks on average. Though you will pay more usually to ship DT's since it must go Priority Mail or UPS Next or Second Day Air.

The coral certainly open.
I am surprised they do not ask that it be placed in the fridge. I do because it is an organic product which deteriorates once the bottle is opened. The preservative helps it from going rotten but doesn't keep it fresh.

I may be over thinking this, but I wonder how safe this preservative is long term for reef animals?

I've used phytoplex, and the only thing I've noticed is increased algae blooms. And I used way under the recommended dosage.

Kent's phyto is dead and preserved, DT's is live and unpreserved. Kent will pollute your tank if overdosed, which really has nothing to do with recomended dosage but more to do with your tanks uptake of phyto. DT's is alive and continues to live in your tank therefore not polluting it. Both add to the bioload either directly or indirectly. also because DT's is alive it is more nutritous. the advantages of using DT's far outweigh the dollar or two extra you pay for it

I was gonna buy microvert until I saw the ingredients. Looked to me like it was just liquified flake food. Maybe someone can post the ingredients in microvert to confirm?

What about LiquidLife BioPlankton? It goes in the freezer. I am not sure if it is alive like DTs, but it seemed to fare well in an article in "marine fish and reef" magazine (forgot which issue. i dont have it any longer)

Has anyone tried this and compared to DTs?
