Within a span of about five minutes, my entire tank has these white mucous strings hanging off everything in the tank and have no idea what this is. The tank is only a few months old. Any ideas and is it harmful?

Seems to be coming from my featherduster...
(Okay, on second thought, I don't know.)

Looks like shroom snot from the mushrooms reacting to the ammonia in the tank. But I dont see mushrooms.

It looks like a freends tank that used Amquel to control ammonia. It gets worse so dont panic when everything is covered with it. I would keep track of your parameters and if you are adding chemicals to control ammonia. STOP

let the tank cycle on its own. the chemicals only inhibit the tanks bacteria from every forming to the proper balance that needs to take place.

If your concerned for your corals take them to the LFS for a week or so. They should sit them for you. Let the tank run its cycle course.

If I am wrong about the Chemicals I have no Idea what will stop it. But it will clear up (after it gets really nasty looking for a couple of days then you will wake up and Wammo Crystal clear.

Thanks for the reply. Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate, <1 ppm, Calcium 420ppm, KH 8dKH, Magnesium 1350ppm. I do have mushrooms, but no ammonia. I have never added Amquel or any clarifier or controlling additive. My concern is oxygen starvation.

No. It appears to me that those are mucus nets that are set by vermetid snails. Look for small/medium tubular, spiral brown circles. At the end you will see two small antennae that the mucus is attached too. They are a good sign of a healthy reeef tank.

I do have a vermetid snail on the other side of the tank and one hanging off the shell of an astraea snail

What seems to be to me with my limited experience is a spawning of some sort. Who's, that's the question. Thanks for everyone's replies. I guess my main concern was poisoning, but the tank is clear this morning and everyone is fine!

Hey Marco is that stuff sticking to the walls of your tank too? I had what appears to be the same thing happen in my tank 2 weeks ago. At first I thought it was slime from my Toadstool leather. Now I believe it was some sort of Bacterial thing.

It started about 2 days after I decided to try "spiking" my Kalk water by dissolving it in vinegar as some people are now doing. Now it may be coincidence but I went back to just regular Kalk.....slime was completely gone in 2 days and has not reoccurred.

Anway glad your tank cleared up and is OK again.

Spawning could be, but also possible if your softies is stressing (from sudden change in chemistry, if there is any). My softies mucus like crazy when once my tank's Alk plummetted. If your tank has been quite stable, likely yours had a spawning, either from spaghetti worms or some kind of worms.

(Jimmy G; not sticking to the walls)
The only things I feed (have fed) is DT's, Mysid Shrimp, (w/ Selcon, or Garlic XTreme), Marine Snow and Pygmy Angel Formula Food. Liquid additives are Bio-Calcium, ESV Iodide (after testing, of course), and Kent Strontium. No major changes in water parameters of feeding. I'll be posting some pictures of my 29g setup one I figure out the digital camera, web page setup. (So many things to do, so little time!) Thanks Everyone for your help!!!

If it was vermetid snails, then it should come back.

You were more than likely feeding the tank with a food that clouds the water a little. The snails send out the strings to catch food. they are stationary and this is the way they eat. I see it mostly when I feed photoplankton.
