I have just witnessed one of my anemonees (rock I think) spewing what can only be described as a thick white sperm like substance. THis went on for about 20-30min. I have a few still pics taken with a digital camera but they are slightly blured. I have 4 15 second movies taken with the same camera which are much clearer and show the large amount of whaterver this substance is in more detail. I would like to know if I could email the movies to someone for thier opinion on what this is. I would post them here but do not know how or if it is even possible. I am in desperate need of an opinion of this occurance as I have never whitnessed anything quite like this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am not even sure of the correct name for these anemonees. I believe they were sold under the common name rock anemonee and I was told at the time of purchace that they are a deep water species. I have had them for about a year now and they have never caused any trouble do not move around the tank at all and make an excellent host for my porcelin crab. Thanks in advance.

It may very well be a male releasing sperm. You'll probably want to do some water changes, depending on the size of your system. You can email me those movies, if you like.

O.K.,

Got it. I would definitely say that is a male releasing sperm. As for id, I'll go through my books tonight and let you know what I find.
BTW, nice sound effects! There's a cow mooing in the background!

Rock anemones are a common name that is used for a few species of anemone. A picture would be appreciated to help you ID it.

Sniper308,
I would id it as Epicystis crucifer. I used for a reference The Reef Aquarium, Volume two, by Delbeek and Sprung. Page 386-387.
