I have had my Bubble Coral in my tank for about 3 months with no problems. Matter of fact it expanded to at least twice the size as it was in the tank at the LFS. Any way like I said it has just looked great the whole time that I have had it. Now it is about the size of half a softball when fully open.
Yesterday I got home after work and every thing was completely normal. Then just before I went to bed about 4 hours later I looked in the tank(this is after lights out)and it was COMPLETELY deflated. I mean it will shrink quite a bit at night when the lights are out but I mean it was FLAT. It looked like a puddle of white goo on the rock it is mounted on.
I swear I thought it was dead but I got home from work this evening and presto.....looks good as it always does. Completely open and very healthy looking.
Can anyone tell what the heck happened?

They do that from time to time to purge themselves (poop). Mine deflates nightly and a day or 2 after I feed it, it really deflates.

They change from day to day - is the current different? They are really picky about current.

I figured it had to be normal somehow because its live and kickin today but it really wierded me out. Ther have been no changes in the tank at all lately. Maybe I never noticed it before, it did happen after the lights were out.
BTW, Tangirl what, how much, and how often do you feed your bubble coral?

I have fish in the freezer that I chopped into very small pieces - maybe 1/4" cubes? and I thaw a piece for each coral/mouth that gets one. I feed them once a week at the most. Sometimes it's less if I see that they snatched up some of the food that was meant for the fish. They've gotten squid, mysis shrimp, even formula one (heck, the fish won't eat it

). I generally feed them during the day, but when they put out those sweeper tentacles at night (the bubble in particular) I've done it then too.

What other corals do you have - the bigger mouths like the bubble should get a piece of food once in a while.

I love watching my plate coral eat.

I feed mine acouple times a week after dark so the fish don't get it and it ussally deflates a day or two after a feeding. It seems to be normal behavior for it.

I have seen this behavior in bubbles alot and agree they are really picky about current. They can also be irritated by traffic from fish even if the current seems fine. Try to find a nice place away from heavy fish traffic and not in the line of alot of current and leave it there. And yes many of these corals will appreciate a nice peice of good quality krille from time to time. The same applies to many brains, hammers, frogspawns, and similiar species as well.
