I think i'll try the net thing first. I have to catch a Harliquin wrasse that I have in my reef. He's a great fish and gets along with everything, but he was intended for my 150g FO. Originally he was too small but I think he will be strong enough now.

I use a 1/2 gal. clear acrylic container (fish can't even see it- at least they don't appear to). I then feed like ANEMONEBUFF does.

I've moved three times and this works every single time.

Happy catching!

I have read on this board before to feed your fish and while they are up top feeding quickly turn off the lights. The sudden darkness will stun the fish and you will be able to net them.

I just caught a lunare wrasse and a yellow tailed damsel - both of which I didn't think I stood a chance of catching. All I did was wait until they were hungary, tehn I lowered my regular aquarium net in with some food. The first day the damsel swam right to it, one swoop and he was in. Couple days later I did the same thing and caught the wrasse. Before the "simple" method, I tried trapping with a container and food - no fish came near it.

Since I'm a fly fisherman catching my purple pseudochromis was easy. I took a size 24 hook and a length of 7X tippet(fishing line). I crimp the barb off the hook and baited with mysis shrimp. It took three tries to hook the fish, but it worked.

, I really like the idea of going fishing :) I'll have to try that one next time.
What I have done in the past is to turn the lights off, and then with a powerfull flash light (mag light etc) flick the light on the fish you want to catch.. temporarily stuns them, and only really stresses the one fish instead of stunning the whole tank. I catch my male banggai like this when hes about to start spewing babies.

I simply use a 2L Corningware glass jar and place it at the rock work where feeding take place.Fishes will swim in and out. Just lift off when the right candidate get in.

For smarter fish, like the 5 inch purple tang, I place a mirror opposite the entrance. The PT will not resist the temptation to show its aggression and rushes right in.

A few years ago I had to catch my clown for a freshwater dip. And this is what I did.

I took a good sized tupperware container(one never cleaned in soap)and held it in the water for a while. Then I fed some flakes. When the clown came to the top I lifted the container, removing her and a good amount of water from the tank. She never saw it coming. It was pretty simple. Just make sure you use floating food.

Bait a net. If you have a few days, it works rather consistently. Take a large fishnet, put food in the net, then just let it sit in the tank. Let it sit there, walk away, take it out after maybe thirty minutes. Only feed your fish way for the duration. Most fish get over their apprehension of the net within a few days, and then it's a simple matter to simply scoop out the fish while it's in the net getting a meal. I've been using this trick for decades, and it's worked on clowns, damsels, cardinals, triggers, angels and even shy feeders like marine bettas.

this method is full-proof. I have caught a gold stripe clown and an orchid dottyback this way:

go to your nearest tackle shop that sells fly fishing equipment. get the smallest fly that they have. the one i got was supposed to be an ant. it's the size of an ant too. the hook is like 1/16" - TINY! no snell either so won't hurt the fish. i trimmed the hairs off of it so it's pretty much just a hook. bait it with a tiny piece of shrimp and go fishing! believe me, this works.

all good ideas!
I've tried the baited net and a baited picture so far with no luck, but I'm going to try some of these other ideas.
Man, people who think fish are stupid, really don't know fish.

I caught my Wrasse once with a hook, he decided to start giving my Christmas tree worms a real hard time so i had to do something quick. It worked good and i still have him some 14 monrths later.
