Got a new Purple tang

I bought my first Red Sea Purple Tang today. I am so excited as I sit here typing and looking over my shoulder at the gorgeous fish swimming about. He seems very relaxed and happy and is eating like a pig. I have always wanted one and finally got him today. Just thought I would share my excitement.

I'll share the excitement! Nice fish! Mind if I ask how much you paid for it? My lfs had one in two weeks ago that sold for $70.00. I've always loved these fish but won't get one until I upgrade my tank size. Good luck with him. JWT

Purple tangs will eat like pigs, they always do. They tend to chase other fishes away during feeding so he gets the best spots where the current will bring the food. They are fearless and can be PITA sometimes. I've seen the purple tang try to use it's 'spike' on the clowns a few times and twice the female clown got slashed. Once in a while it fight's its own reflection and the colours and markings just gets richer and thats when he looks the best.
I hate him but he just looks too damn good! One more thing, this guy I have is an attention seeker, seems to show up in nearly every damn closeup photo of my tank.

Purple tangs are going for $29 around here, depending on where you go (some stores have the same fish for $99 on "special" even though they are coming from the same supplier). I know you weren't asking me for the price, but thought I'd share it anyway. I just can't shut up.

my purple tang wouldnot eat anything i tried everything,he lasted 1 1/2 months or so and got week and drifted into my 20 in green carpet and became lunch

Mine will eat anything but his favorite food is Nori

I have mine since November 2000 and has grown from 11/2 inch to 4 inches now.
Great looking guy and behave like what Tanzy said . . .flash its razor at any new additions irregardless of size! If the newbie can outlast his harrassment for one to two days, it will do well as by then, Purple macho will qualify it with a 'Manhood' medal and life goes on.

I got mine on sale for 49. He is about 3 inches, maybe a little less. Still eating like a pig and yes he is an attention whore. Every time you walk up tot he aquarium, he swims right up to you and almost flirts with you. Beautiful.

My purple tang behaves like the others have mentioned. Consumes a leaf of romaine lettuce in 4 hours. A nori cigarette in 2 hours. Eats any other type of food. In short; a pig.

I've had one for a couple of years, crazy fish always tries to nail me when my hand is in the tank. I've always escaped so far, has anyone else ever been spiked by a tang ? I imagine my time is coming . . .

i got spiked by a yellow tang once while trying to catch him, it was not pleasent

I have a mutant purple tang. He got his @ss beat when I added him to my FO, so I put him into another tank. He was so pyschologically tramatized by this ordeal that he is now a wimp.

Yes, he eats, but he runs for shelter ebvery time I come to the tank.

Still, one beautiful fish.
