Another reefer recently brought this up when I mentioned that my pH was running a little low. Have any other smokers noticed that their pH is on the low side? I'm still in the safe zone, but am usually between 7.9-8.0 and would like to be in the 8.2 range. I haven't started my dosing regimen since I set my tank back up and I'm sure that will help, but it seems it should naturally be a little higher.

Yup... you were "another reefer" as mentioned earlier... figured I'd leave your name out of it in case people thought we were on crack! :)

I've been letting my tank settle in since setting in back up and haven't started my dosing regimen yet, and I know that it will bring my pH up... just wondering how much effect the smoking actually does have and if anyone aside from us has noticed this.

i dont smoke in my house and never will, so i dont have that problem but i know it can directly affect the tanks ph... my words of wisdom for you quit smoking (i am) or go outside and smoke.... also dosing baked baking soda (alk) will raise ph a bit...(as u already know)

I've been smoking for eons, and the only time I had a problem with PH dropping was with my freshwater cichlids if I didn't do water change routinely. They are big fish, eat alot and poop alot.
I don't think the smoking has anything to do with it. My other tanks don't have this problem. But of course I could be wrong, and you should quit any way. Smoking = Cancer

umm yea baking soda straight up will lower the ph of the tank, check out the articles on advancedaquarist from randy holmes, you need to bake it to drive excess water and co2, and then thats what buffers ph a lot. the ph swing down from straight up baking soda will only lower ph a little, but the baked version will raise it a lot. hth

I am a smoker who lives in a house with two friends who also smoke. I have a 55g FW aquarium in my living room were we smoke like crazy and for the year that i had it i was never able to get the ph even up to 7.0 I've wondered if smoke ever did anything to the tank. Maybe your on to something. But my 155 reef dosent seem to be effected
