Saw it and had to have it. Right next to my 3+ year old green haddoni. The clown has already gone in to "feel" it out and its already attached

How lucky am I. Just hoping its as healthy as I think it is

Can you do me a favor and get me a closeup, showing individual tentacles and the flesh between them? With the recent flood of dyed blue carpets, I've been trying to track characteristics of the natural vs dyed ones.

FWIW, from what I can tell from the pics, I don't -think- yours is dyed.

Like I said, I don't think yours is, from what I can tell. It -looks- like there are brown tentacles intermixed with the blue, which is one of the best diagnostics I've found so far... the dyed anemones tend to have uniform tentacle coloration, with at most some shading differences.

The second best diagnostic I've found is price. Almost every blue carpet I've looked at that cost less then $100 has been dyed. I stress however that there have been exceptions to this.

mine was less than 100 bucks..not a whole heck of alot less though. lol.

As for the coloration...the tips are blue...rest isnt...there is some brownish and its colored very similarly to my green haddoni....

The halides arent on yet...when they do ill take some new pics and post em.

Thanks. One detail I can't make out from the pics that would help is the coloration between the tentacles towards the outer rim. What's it look like? A darker blue, a brown, or the pale yellowish-greenish-tan that's common towards the mouth?

CJ..towards the end, the color becomes more vibrant and more solid. The tips of all tentacles are blue but the length of them arent....but definately more blue around the edges than towards the mouth.

Seababies..

No real secret that I know of

I have a skimmerless tank but the anemone has been in skimmed tanks of mine too. This is its 4th tank!

It loves high intense light and will settle for nothing else and loved to be fed(mostly by my maroon clown) gets prime reef, enriched brine and im sure alot of other stuff floating around in my tank. Other than that..good water quality and patience

Charles,
I was at a wholesaler yesterday and saw probably 50 blue carpets (3 tanks of them) wholesaling for ~30 bucks. Assuming they were dyed, I left them there.. but it was hard to get a look because they don't have any lights over the inverts <sigh>.

I got an anemone as a gift several years ago that looked remarkably like this one, except the blue was a bit lighter...more of a sky blue color. It's thrived in several tanks, survived more than a few moves, and as it grew I realized it wasn't a carpet at all. I recently tentatively id'd it as a gigantea! Woohoo!

It's oral disk is now about 16" across when fully extended. Tentacles are usually about 2-3" long, and the base/stalk is anywhere from an inch or two to 10" when it's extending for light/food/exercise/whatever. :-D It's currently in a 75 running on the ecosystem mud filter with 500w MH and 200w VHO, and is home to my pair of maroon clowns.

So- do the dyed anemones eventually loose their color? I have had a blue one for 6 mos., he is thriving and the color has not changed that I have noticed. It is a lighter, sky-blue color.

I have had a blue carpet for close to one year. Still blue as ever. I have not heard of carpet anemone's being dyed. Carpets are naturally colored brown, green, blue, purple and red. Take a look at the Reef Aquarium Volume Two in the anemone section, Sprung has some pictures. The only anemones I have heard about being dyed were H.malu (sebae) or H.crispa. The easiest way to tell if an anemone is dyed is to look at the foot base, as the dye coloration will concentrate there. I really do not think the price dictates whether the anemone was dyed or not. The majority of colored carpets come from Bali and Jakarta. I just think they are collecting them more. That is why we are seeing the influx of colored carpets. Which really is not good in its self.

CJ,

Have you been burned by a dyed anemone in the past? I posted several months ago about my new blue carpet and you had the same reservations.

It hasn't quite been a year, but here is that same anemone

that blue carpet ate the dust. Not sure why. I woke up and my clown was feeding it to my green haddoni(which ive had over 3 years).

Sh*t happens..no more anemones for me once my haddoni croaks(which might never happen)

Nope. I just find it really unethical.

I have not heard of carpet anemone's being dyed.

I've -seen- hundreds of dyed ones, almost all haddonis. Yellows. Pinks. Blues.

Take a look at the Reef Aquarium Volume Two in the anemone section, Sprung has some pictures.

Yes, largely doctored. No offense to Julian or Danny Ramirez, but Julian's books tend to have very doctored coloration in their pics.

Not that I'm saying carpets don't come in those colors. Giganteas often come in those colors. Haddonis occasionally come in those colors. Three years ago, a blue haddoni was a $500 dollar animal. Now, you can pick one up for $50.

The majority of colored carpets come from Bali and Jakarta.

Which species are we talking about here? If it's gigantea, I can't disagree. If it's haddoni, that's an interesting insight and one I'll have to look at further.

Tying in to what I was just saying, do you have any way of determining where these were shipped from? And I'm assuming they were haddonis, right?

If they live that long, yup. I would think that if yours is still healthy and unfaded after six months you don't have anything to worry about.

Charles: On the origin of these.. I have no idea, I didn't ask because I'm sure it would have been a trial and tribulation to find someone who might have known. I did have someone else tell me their blue carpets were coming from the maldives via sri lanka, but I haven't seen theirs in person. FWIW, yeah they looked like haddonis. They had a bunch of green ones and a bunch of brown ones too. If I'm ever there again I'll have to take my own light source so I can see detail better heh.
