My regal tang has developed a case of salt water ich and I am not sure how to go about treating the disease. I have heard of a medicine called ruby reef kick ick and want to know your opinion. Will a cleaner shrimp help. Do I need to quarentine the fish and give him a fresh water dip?

If you can catch this hippo in a reef then hypo-salintity is an excellent treatment.

Trapping was not an option when when my beloved hippo tang "Freckles" came down with a moderate case of ich several months ago form scrappin` with his tank mates.

I really had him pegged as a "goner".
Out of desparation and inability to remove him, I tried galic extract-soaked food and now I must confessed it worked because Freckles is here with us today.....

Dont know about Ruby Red but I have always been weary of "quick cures" and doubt a cleaner shrimp will work

Good luck

By the way, the cleaner shrimp might not cure the ich but it sure helps. They are good little workers. (usually, at least mine is

This may be a silly question, but when you talk about garlic are you talking about some special thing found in the pet store or are you talking just garlic from the grocery?

Here is a wy to use fresh garlic, there may be better ways though.

Take a garlic bulb and pull one clove (section) off.

Remove the dried "skin"

put the clove between two table spoons and crush very good.

Mince the garlic with a sharp nife or garlic press.

Put all the peices into a small amount of water, about a shot glass full.

Pour a small amunt onto a saucer and soak any type of food in it.

store the remainder in the fridge but remember the older it gets the less effective.

Thanks fishaholic for the advice. I have all ready started the soak. Hopefully the tang makes it through.

I would skip the shrimp for now until he is cured. Something to keep in mind is that ich is ever present in our systems, but is dormant for the most part, or at least in balance with the system, not overtaking it, and not being killed off by it. It can come out in times of stress when it gets a foot hold on a fish, so by putting a new cleaner in there, you will probably only stress the fish out. The reason is that a new cleaner will incessantly clean your diseased fish, and in a small tank, he cannot really escape (in a big tank either for that matter). Seems like a lot of people advocate garlic, hope it works, but figure out why he has it in the first place, because he shouldn't get stressed enough to let it get to him despite the fact that they are very susceptible to infestations. The dip is a good idea, but good luck catching him, and the stress could kill him itself, so may not even be a good idea.

I do what fishoholic does but I also feed the fish the small pieces of garlic as well as the garlic extract soaked nori.

Hope no one minds if I butt in here, but my Purple Tang had ich, I used the garlic treatment and it worked. No more Ich (on his body). Now, how do I "build" him up as he is still faded in color? I have continued the garlic soaked food, which he really seems to love. He chases the garlic pieces to eat before the fish food. I intend to continue feeding him the garlic soaked food for this reason. Will this help with his resistance and help with his coloring or should I get a vitamin like Selcon now for his food soaks?
Thank you

When I first started I tried a miracle cure and crashed the tank. Nowadays I use garlic just like dave suggested. 100% satisfied. I now feed garlic and garlic laced foods once a week as a preventive measure. I also have 2 cleaners which I think help somewhat, but could not handle it on their own.

I will paraphrase a little but the article link in the beginning of the thread gives it in great detail.

When fresh garlic is cut it releases a juice that contains Alicin which is what helps against marine ich and helps against reoccurence. The longer the garlic is cut the less potent the Alicin is. So fresh garlic will always be the most potent way to use garlic.

I doubt garlic powder would have very much potentcy and in both situations powder and minced I am sure you have preservitives involved that may have some ill effects on inverts.

The article articulates this much better than I can.
