My Spectrapure RO/DI unit is 2 years old and I use about 20-25 gallons of water a week. I check the membrane using the directions that came with it and it checks out fine. How long do these things last? Who has ever changed their membrane and why?
That is a good question and I am curious as to the answer as well. I have a KENT RO/DI kit and have used it for about 14 months. I make about 45g a week. Back to the top for ya
I've got a spectrapure RO/DI and have changed the RO membrane once at about the 3 year mark. I think Spectrapure recommends something like that. I believe the life is relative to the quality and quantity of water passing through it. You might touch base with one of the techs at Spectrapure to see what they say but just guessing I would say you have a little more life left in yours. BTW you can upgrade your membrane when its time to a higher volume and they will send you the proper plastic reducer fitting. I went from a 25g/day to a 60g/day for maybe $20 more I don't remember exactly but it seemed worth it.
Changing it is just about as easy as changing a filter no problem. Have a good Thanksgiving.
I went three years before I changed mine, Kent 50gpd unit. I also upgraded to a 100gpd membrane when I did change. It's overkill, I use less than five gallons a day between the three tanks. But it's nice to be able fill my holding tanks fast.
Be sure and change the pre-filter and carbon cartridge every six months or so to get the max life out of your unit.
I also run the effluent through a resin cartridge. So, when I see an increase in resin usage I know it's time to change the menbrane.
My membrane slows down real fast. We do not have that good of water here in Joliet, IL (hard water real bad need a softener). I have 2
prefilters on my main water line the gets clogged every 2-3 weeks. My unit is a 75g, but now I get maybe 20g a day if I am lucky. I might get a booster pump to help it out. I used about 4 gals a day for my to tanks
