Hey Guys, I just have to vent a little. I just bought a nice Soly and some other Acro frags and I want to give them a some extra current. I know Rio's aren't any good, but I have a NEW Rio 800 still in the box collecting dust so I decided to use it until I could get a better one. It lasted less than 24 hrs before it craped out. I took it out and apart. I washed the magnet and sleeve in fresh water, put it back together and it's running again. We'll see for how long. I gotta get a Sea Swirl! I had a Rio 600 that lasted less than a year on a small skimmer. That one I couldn't get going again.

Sorry to hear that mike, I only use my rios for waterchanges and salt mixing. I have three maxijets in my tank, and am contemplating buying one or two more. So far I haven't had any problems with them. (knock on wood)

Mike, your lucky most people who have Rio's crap out on them also end up with a tank full of oil, nice. You now join a list as long as my arm of unhappy Rio users.

My beef is that as a newbie, before I knew about grounding probes, my 3 Rios almost electrocuted me! Now I only use Maxijets and only worry about getting stung by my coral.

I replaced my RIO 800 and the RVT attachment with a MaxiJet 1200 and the Venturi Intake from Premium Aqautics. Much more efficeint than the RIO and none of the potential worries.

I too had a rio 600 cluck out at 6 months old.
Every time I shut it off for tank feeding, I had to pull the thing apart and clean it and it would run again till the next feeding. Then at 6 months, I shut it off for it's last time because when I tried to restart it just sat there.
I'm pleased to say I broke my own personal long distance shot put with the piece of crap when I hurled it out the door to the trash can down the driveway.

Just a question but why don't we as owners of these things stop being ripped off and possible killed and just take legal action. I know I'm lucky because mine was just a cheap 600 but like it says in the posts above and all over the boards:

I was electrocuted

My tank filled with oil and I lost my 10,000.00 investment

I don't know what happened but all my stuff died

Now I understand why I want a grounding probe

That thing cost me....

It died

didn't last a month

man...this has got to stop someday!

Still baffles my mind WHY some manufactures of QUALITY equipment still provide the Rio's with their products. (I know why, the cost). A very poor reason IMO. Also thanks to all who post their experiences (good or bad) on this forum. I sincerely appreciate not having to go through this problem.

Yes, but...

What can be used to replace the RIO 800 used for sucking in air for skimmers that use them?

I just got an Precision Marine HOT and I am pretty happy with it. It has the RIO 800 that pulls in air into the water intake in the tank (not in the line on the way to the shkimmer). When I change it out, what else does this?
