I cannot figure it out. I have two saddle back clowns on has started maturing to a female and the male is haveing a really tough time. I know you have to watch them at their fighting stage but they are over that. I havent seen teh female chasing the male around for weeks. He is just starting to look really bad he has lost his color he is a really pale brown. His laterial line is visable(not LLD) his eyes look kind of dreamy. He eats a little bit but not enough and he has been swimming not as much he has just been hiding in a hole int eh live rock. I think he is about to die. He doesnt have any visible problems (ick, fungus, ect.) all i noticed was about 3 weeks ago his gill was bubbled out as if it was inflamed but it diappeared in a few days. His gills still look kind of ackward could this mean a bacterial infection. I really dont want to lose him it took me a while to get a pair of tank raised saddle backs.

What are your water conditions(Ammonia,Nitrite,Nitrate, etc)?Do you have a ground probe on the tank?Do you supplement the food? How do the other fish look?If All these factors are good and cannot see any visible ailments or sickness, maybe the fish ahd an internal infection like parasites. This would make the fish lose its appetite and to hide.I also read that is it near impossible to cure internal parasites.Again this is only a guess,I would definately look into other factors as I mentioned.
Hope I helped somewhat.

Well i just tested everything
ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 0
pH 8.2
Alk 2.8 m/L

I makes no sense. I dont have a grounding probe but i usually can feel when there is current and nothing else seems affected. I feed them prime reef, formula one, formula two, and scallops. I usually soak the food in WM ammino acid soak stuff twice a week. I think i am just going to have to hope he lives.

Without anything specific to identify what is ailing the little guy, I would use a general medication such as Maracyn 2 for saltwater. Double dose the initial treatment and then follow the instructions on the box. I hope the little guy makes it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but many/most conchs carry toxic venom. I'll bet he took a hit from the conch, which caused the inflamed gill. The gill healed but not before system wide damage, which would explain the slow death spiral.
