Purchased a beautiful Porites cylindrica yesterday and was wondering about polyp extension. Do they normally fully extend their polyps to appear fuzzy or do they stay closer to the corallite to appear almost smooth? Besides bright light and strong currents is there any other advise you would recommend?

The Porities I have in my tank (3 kinds/color morphs), are all very different animals indeed. They do not seem to follow the typical Acropora Behaviour pattern. Some days I'll see the polyps out on my yellow one, other days they're completely smooth and "Waxy" looking. My Green colony seems to be far more typical, in that it usually has one appearance during the day (and rarely changes). That colony is also very close to one of my anemone's, and gets stung from time to time, so I'm sure that contributes.
If your colony has not extended it's polyps for a week or more, I'd worry, otherwise, dont' sweat it, they're strange corals.

I checked it out this morning while the lights were off and it's polyps were fully open. When the lights are on they are out but not near as much.
