I am looking to add some powerheads to my newly set up system. It is a 180 Full Reef. How many powerheads should I have and what are the best ones out there? I have had problems with fish and critters getting stuck in the powerheads in my small tank and would like to know how to avoid that as well. What powerheads are you all using? How many and how are they set up?

Maxijets.

I have a 180 reef also, but I have two return pumps, a Mak4 and a rio that does like 900gph. Right now the Mak4 is split with a T and one goes to a sea swirl, which is great. I also have a maxijet, but will be adding a couple more maxis on a wavemaker.

Rios are crap, IMO. the Maxijets work great on wavemakers- completely silent!

O.K. I have both. I have maxi 1200's 4ea on a tsunami wavemaker. Awsome wavemaker by the way. comes with light sensor to "calm the seas" at night. Maxi's AREN'T completely silent but are a lot quieter than Rio which i used to run. Maxi's are the best powerhead at GPH/heat/power cons/INSTANT ON/parts/reliabilty/looks/size/etc,.On a 180 I would firmly say a seaswirl and a good return pump are the ticket. I've got a 3/4" ss and it is awsome. Point and shoot and NO failures like a whole lot of people are probably going to say (an old design problem that was changed)old news. Anyway I have both running on my 75 and actually the SS in combo with the wavemaker make some REALLY random currants. If your looking to get gooooood waves, get a swirl and a good strong pump if you don't have already (in which case just run in line), or put a pump on a closed loop with the swirl. Option 2 you'll end up with a whole lot of maxi's and a wavemaker that will cost just a much especially on a 180. Inmyhumbleallknowinginthissituationopinion.

I like Hagen and Pengiun powerheads only because of the mounting feature.....dont use maxijets only because of those damn suction cups....
