I have been noticing these little white fuzzy balls in my sump and protein skimmer. They are attached to the plexiglass. Any idea what they could be??

I was going to say sponges until you mentioned they were in your skimmer as well. Sponges are usually killed by exposure to air, and the concentration of bubbles in a skimmer might as well be air.

I don't think ole Frosty could tolerate the 80-82 degree temps in the ole sump. I heard that these are some kind of sponges that collect in sumps. FWIW

Have you noticed any fish missing lately? If fuzzy... might of been more than 24 hours ago. These are likely places they could of ended up. Just a shot in the dark...
You may want to try describe'n this a little better.. Is it porous like a sponge look for holes etc.? Or just fuzzy? how big are these balls?

Well, no missing fish as of lights out last night. I would say that these porous, cottony balls are about 2-4mm. They are mainly in the baffles of the sump and the quiet part of the skimmer. I don't have a dig camera to take pics with either.

I've got them also, in the over flow and in the sump and skimmer. The might be sponges(they feel like em)or they might be some kind of sea squirt. I have not looked at them closely or with a magnifing glass. There are some about 1/2 inch long. I also have some purple, hard spikes about 1/16 inch thick and about 1/2 inch long. These are everywhere, on the rocks on shells and on the snails. Anyone know what they are? Steve
