I have been hearing some "popping" sounds in my 90g and suspect a mantis shrimp. This may also explain the disappearance of 2 of 3 barnacle blennies. I am going to try to catch this guy, but I was curious as to whether a mantis could be responsible for attacking a cucumber.

Yes, it could. Stomatopods will attack anything from crabs, to fish, to the light on a heater.

Pardon me, are you married?

If you are single, yes, the mantis could be the culprit. Otherwise............................................(whisper.....check your drawers)

How rapid are the popping sounds? 1 or 2 then long pause-probably not mantis but a pistol shrimp. Multiple popping (mantis beating on clam shell causes this, then mantis gets nice raw clam meal). Try using flashlight at night with red filter if you can get a hold of one, you should see either out then.

Naaaa, i recon a Cuke could break out some kungfooey styles and beat the Mantid swine into submission before unleashing its deadly desolving intestinal mega-ray. Then again he could just get cut in-half like the useless sand dwelling poop monster that it is.

It may be a pistol shrimp. It is usually 2 "pops" and then a pause before it resumes. Sometimes a long pause. I guess it is time for me to do some research on pistol shrimp.

Am I married....? Good question. I wish i knew the answer to that. oh well....

Thanks.
