...Right before my eyes. When they go, they really do go with a bang!
After a long day of chores and watching three small kids, I grabbed a beer and headed for a little R&R in front of the tank. As I turned the corner, I realized it was dark and quiet. Not a good feeling!
I noticed the breaker on one of my power strips had thrown. As soon as I reset the strip the main breaker to the house tripped. A smart person would have stopped there. But not me.
I ran down stairs and reset the breaker. When I got back to the tank the Rio was literally exploding. Each bang bounced the pump about a half inch off the sump floor. After the third explosion the breaker on the power strip tripped again. The pump was a mess.
Each explosion popped a new hole and mini volcano out of the epoxy. Luckily, my return pump was also plugged in to the same power strip, so when it blew, the water was not being pumped into the tank so no damage to any inhabitants (amen!). But the sump was a mess. Oily film, awful smell etc...
Moral: Rios SUCK! Get rid of them, now! I read all the posts about rio pumps and decided to take the risk with the attitude it would never happen to me. The really strange part is I have two 2500's that I swap out every 30 days. While out of the tank I soak them in vinegar over nite and clean them. I just completed the swap that morning so the pump was spotless. I was very lucky and have a new appreciation for power strips....
