I need some help Identifying this.

Just noticed this on the back of one of my live rocks, It's a creamy white color, (more of a white color), kind of spherical, and has little dents all over it. It really looks like a golf ball and is about the same size. It looks alittle fuzzy.

Sorry I can't take a photo but can anyone guess what this is from the description?

It doesn't seem to be hurting the tank and all water paramenter are still fine.

I don't know if I can even remove it easily without taking out the rock and scrubbing it. BTW, the rock is fully cured and has been in my tank for close to 5 months.

Thre question, should it stay or should it go???

Thanks
Bruce

I think it's a type of sponge... (If it's what I think it is, if you look closely it looks like a bundle of white, flossy woven strands...)

Hi Cheese Sandwich

Yep, You got it, it looks like a bundle of white, flossy woven strands.

I guess it's ok and can stay in the tank without worry?

Is this one of those things that can fowl the tank without warning? Do you know anything about them?

Thanks again

Sound like the type of sponge that's been in my tank for about 5 years. It got to the size of a large jaw breaker couple of times and then would shrink back down to 1/2 before starting to grow again. This process took about a year and a half. I'm figuring that the shrinkage was due to some missing nutrient/chemical. During this period the tank was fairly stable (except for the time the heater stuck on high for a couple of days!)so i'm not sure.

So to answer your question don't worry enjoy it as part of the diversity of your tank.

By the way- mine was kinda stuck under a rock originally so I moved it for better viewing. I placed it in the water flow of a PH and it seemed to grow faster. And as I'm sure you know****DON'T EXPOSE IT TO AIR*******

It's of Genus Clathrina, according to Fossa & Nilsen's MCRA Vol 3... (page 41, top)

Howdy,

I would opt for a putting wedge in that kind of rough

Seriously, I had a similar type of sponge on a peice of mushroom rock. The sponge looked like white floss that had been woven, but it was more of a spike shape than a ball. Never had any problems with it, and it grew slowly.

Good luck,

Scott.
