I fed my red open brain last nite for the first time. It was a rather slow process, my neon dottyback kept stealing the food from the brain cause it took so long for the brain to "eat" it. Is this normal, or do I have a "slow brain"? If its always gonna be this slow I was thinking of getting a small plastic strawberry basket to put over the brain until he's done eating, would this be OK?

Thanks

Sounds like you already figgered out the solution to your problem

Lot's of people do something similar to keep the critters from stealing the food from corals. Your idea will work just fine. Good luck!

All brains eat that slow. You can always wait til all the lights go out and feed it. Work for me, but now that I have cleaner shrimps, light out doesn't help. Will have to do the strawberry basket thing.

What do you feed the brain? I have recently purchased one and LFS told me reef solution and keep the Iodine up.
Thanks

I feed my Brain all kinds of things ;-)

The Red and green Open Brain in my tank however, gets Krill, Silversides, Prawn, and whatever other chunky fish-based products I happen to be dispensing into the tank that day. I do also find it neccessary to protect the brain w/ a basket when feeding. This has taken mine on average a half hour, sometimes up to 2 hours to finish a large meal.

Brains don't nessasary require feeding given the proper lighting and current, however mine seem to perk up a little after they are fed. The size of the meal depends on the size of the coral. My green brain is aprox 6" across and I feed it meaty foods about 1" long which it consumes in about 15-20 min.
The basket is a great idea to keep others away.

Hope this helps

JeffH - I don't have an open brain, but I'm sure the process is similiar. Take a small piece of the shrimp/fish/whatever, maybe 1/4 inch square (a little bigger?) and place it on him. It's neat to watch them open up their mouths and move it in. When I feed my plate coral, I'll place it in different places. Cool.

I don't know about reef soultion, but if you do a search, I'm sure you'll find some answers about that around here.
