Here's the background. I have a 72 bow front with a mag 500 for a return, Previous link on power heads has me about ready to buy two maxi jets 900's. Seems like I should need (Want?) a wave maker. Any suggestions?
I bought an Ocean Motion Wave Maker years ago, and have never had any problems with it. I used to hook up between 8 and 12 pumps to it by using power strips and my tank was crazy with waves. Now, I'm only using 2 power heads (tiny Rio pumps which will probably crap out on me in the next few months as the larger ones have already done) but I used to use Hagen Aquaclear 802's. The model I have has 4 switched outlets and you can program tons of different programs using any number of the outlets with various timings as well. It also has a feeding switch. I think when I got mine it was around $100 as a floor model never used. Most of them are around that price today or a little more. I've also seen some power strips that have timers on them, but don't know a lot else.
For about the same money as a couple powerheads and a "wave maker", you could instead opt for a Sea-Swirl. On a 72g tank, you could go with one, 3/4" Sea-Swirl with your existing return pump and be all set (and much happier in the long run). Hope that helps.
I was kinda leaning towards the Red Sea Wavemaster Pro. But my biggest concern is the Red Sea reputation. By that, I mean my only experience with Red Sea has been thier test kits. IMHO they are bad. Can anyone give me thier experience/opinions on the Wave Master Pro?
I have the redsea pro on my 55g and it works great with the maxi-jets PH.I'm setting up my 180g and going to use 2-1" seaswirls instead of PH.You may want to consider using a seaswirl with your return pump, and not have the ugly PH inside of you're tank.
I use seaswirls and would highly recommend them. I have two 1/2" and one 1", I wish I didn't have the 1" version because it is quite loud for a bed room tank. In fact I will be changing out the 1" for two more 1/2" in the near future.
