I'm beginning to agree. And if I'm not mistaken there haven't been any reports of the smaller rio's causing any problems. Just the larger ones.

I just switched back to the Rio a few minutes ago and I am already happier. More air in the chamber, more flow through the skimmer and no chug chug. Granted I tried the 900. I'll probably go ahead and order a 1200 and see how that works out. Since that seems to be what most people were happiest with.

For many skimmers, nothing could be further from the truth. I have a Remora Pro, which came with a Rio 1400. It worked OK. I later bought a good old Mag 3 for it and the skimmer works much better. It's also a very quiet pump, UL listed for God's sake, and much sturdier and much more powerful than the Rio. Mags are great!

Most manufacturers will lie about the best pump for their skimmer. I am not sure why though.

personaly i would have no problem using the smaller rio mot of the problems people have is with their large ones. and the other coment if companes like cpr aquamedic. i would thinmk thay would use the best pump for their skimmers because it directally reflect how the skimmer works. it would be silly to make a good skimmer and put a pump on it that dosent work well with the skimmer just to save money, because in the long rum if the skimmer dosent work well the company wont stay around

Inexpensive is part of it I'm sure.. but in talking to several skimmer manufacturers and complaining about rio reliability, pretty much all of them say they would switch to a maxijet if the maxijet came with a real venturi.. the venturi kit they sell is completely inefficient and doesn't make nearly the air the rio reverse venturi makes. Some companies screwed around with the otto pump as a rio replacement as it also comes with a similar venturi, but in the otto there is another issue.. the venturi hole is TINY and it clogs up really fast, which hurts performance.

As for CPR, yeah.. they aren't particularly honest about the pump issue.. even if you stick with rios, the performance of a rio 800 is a thousand times better than the 600, but they'll tell you flat out that the 800 is too powerful, and that's why they don't use it. What a joke.
