Would it be possible to have an outdoor reef?
Could someone just dig a hole in their back yard, line it with plastic, add a few pumps, heaters, whatever, and have a successful reef? You wouldn't need lights so you would save alot of cash, and you could make it hold thousands of gallons, as long as your yard is big enough? Any thoughts?

Temperature - must be very stable...
Salinity - must protect it from the rain..
Pollution - dust and leaves could be a disaster
Predation, kids, etc.

But it has been done

This is one of the rare instances where a topic should be moved to the GRD, and not vice versa.

Banish thee, Chucker!

You could enclose such a pond in a greenhouse-type arrangement...

You live in Maryland? Don't do it. Your weather wouldn't support it. However, if you lived in a warm weather climate like California or Florida, Sea World and various aquariums are perfect examples of how successful you can be. The greenhouse could be done, although the corrosion inside would be horrendous with how greenhouses horde moisture.

I wasn't thinking of trying it, just thought it would be cool. I have seen alot of fish ponds around my area (goldfish, koi, ect.) and thought it would be neat to have a reef pond. Guy, you said it's been done. Where? Any pics?
thanks.

If you're interested about outside possibilities, go to Roozen's (Maryland/SE DC). Their whole coral/fish operation is a large greenhouse. They have a very large selection of fish; however, the health of their corals is not so hot IMO.

Actually, I do think this belongs in the general discussion: on topic and very interesting, IMHO. I'm not a moderator here so I can't move it. Hopefully Chucker will catch this thread and agree with me.

I went to the Waikiki Aquarium a couple of years back. They have an outdoor aquarium with plenty of yellow tangs and assorted other critters. The exhibit is entitled "Edge of the Reef". The tank is quite large -7500 gallons. The craziest feature for a hobbiest like me is there is no MH setup. Of course not, they rely on the tropical Hawaiian sun.

Let me try to post a link.

I tried to get a link directly to the "Edge of Reef" page, but could only get the index page. You will have to click on "Edge of Reef".
