Light doesn't cause algae, even old yellow light doesn't cause algae. Nutrients are the cause, and light is the catalyst, but without light nothing will grow. A proper reef tank will not have algae problems even with bright yellow lights.

Have patience. Do your 10-15% monthly water changes and keep those small hermit crabs and snails! Don't overfeed, and skim, skim, skim...

Good luck!

Hermits and snails do not eat hair algae.Believe me I know from first hand experience.Nutrient levels warrent the growth of all algae.Follow nathans advice as above.

I do not like doing that but I have to object to *Hermits dont eat hair algae*.
I had a yellow polyp rock with green and purple hair algae on it. The first day I put the hawaii and blue leg hermits in my tank they went on that rock. I counted 9 of them and a scarlet reef hermit too on the rock. They cleaned it so well I could not recognize it at all There were holes in the rock I did not even know they existed!.. the only problem is I wonder if they stopped at the algae because now I do not even have the yellow polyps anymore.
