My skimmer has gone wild for the last time. It was a KNOP Hang on, went nuts every so often for no known reason and would flood my floor. Went to my LFS, not much to choose from... they recommended the Prism, I was skeptical but desperate. I cannot run much water through it or it will pump out the water and even with it nearly shut down it went nuts and overflowed on me. I also have a CPR... never has it gone nuts, but doesnt skim so well. I am looking for a good skimmer that wont ruin my floor. Any ideas? Your help would be appreciated. I dont want to keep buying skimmers and have to toss them in the closet because they dont work. It needs to be a hang on and pretty quiet. Hubby doesnt like noise. My tank is 100 gallons. Thanks so much.

I haven't used any hang-on skimmer except the bakpak but I have heard good things about the AquaC Remora and the Precision Marine HOT-1. I have used their in-sump skimmers and they work well IMO but I have no personal experience on their hang-on models.

If you go the Aqua C route, I would go with the Remora Pro. I have the regular Aqua C remora on my 29 and it has never gone crazy or overflowed, but owuld be too small for a 100 gallon tank. I have heard good things about the precision marine HOT-1 skimmer as well. Good luck.

I was told the Hot 1 is rated for a 75 gallon tank but it does have a collection cup that will shut down the skimmer when it is full. I am liking that option.

Anyone else have any experience with any others? Thanks.

Find a handyman to drill a small hole on the side of the collection cup for you. Attach a small fitting, connect it to a 1/2" vinyl tubing to a bucket, this way, you will never have to worry about flooding again. Just dump out the bucket regularly.

I have a remora and never had any problems with it overflowing.

Danmhippo, I did that myself with the Knop, into a 5 gallon bucket, I'd go to bed with everything fine and my husband would wake me up at three AM and the bucket was over flowing.

I couldn't find any reason why. Would shut down the skimmer, clean up the mess, refill the five gallons and it would function fine for the next several months or so and then it would do it again. I have absolutely no idea why. Then I got that Prism and the same thing happened. UGH!

Julieanne,

SEX! I'm sure my skimmer goes nuts every few months because of sexual reproduction in my tank! One time my anemonie spawned and the tank got VERY cloudy for several hours.
