Question: Can you go to the beach in N.California and use the sand as a live sand in a tropical reef? Would the wee beasties live?

I have a friend who uses SF Bay water for water changes in his tropical FO and you should see the bloom of critters after a few days! Would this transalte to sand?

Nope, I think the temp difference is too great. 50f for No Cal and 80f for a reef...that's an 80f difference!

Not much tropical reef life at 50f...:-(

I am doubtful much would survive more than a couple months at the longest. Might be a quick food source for other inhabitants but dieoff might also contribute nutrients.

Bummer...I was afraid this would be the answer. Maybe it's time to experiment with a couple of pounds in a 10 gal.
