I have a 1/3 HP CSL in line chiller. I simply love it! I have it on my 150. Noise is noticeable, but not horrrible like hte first chiller I owned years ago. Fortunately, mine is plumbed into the garage, so there is not any noise in my house. Keep in mind, if you put it under your stand they put out a good deal of heat themselves, so sometimes it is a self defeating purpose. I recommend if you are on the cusp of one size, to move up to the next size. Never know when you may find a great deal on a larger tank and would have a new underpowered chiller. Good luck. HTH

I have a 1/2hp CSL PowerCooler on my 220g....keeps my tank at 79-80 automatically....Love it....I do recommend you going with a 240volt chiller instead of a 110, as you will save money in the long run. My chiller is plumbed right into my closed loop which is an AM3000 feeding 2 - 1" SS's here is a pic 4 ya!

Note I cut holes in my wall behind my tank and plumbed it outside for noise/heat purposes.

I use the Cyclone Coil chiller in the 1/5 Hp size on my 75 gallon tank. It sounds like a water fountain or dorm room refridg. Not that bad but does make some noise. I don't even here it anymore. Works great with the coil. No plumbing or leaks possible. I keep mine out of the stand because of the heat. It needs plenty of cool airflow to be efficient. It does not significantly heat my room but I have it in a very large room. In a small room the heat would be an issue. I have had this chiller for 7 to 8 years. I have had it charged once since I bought it and that was this year because it stopped cooling. Now works perfect again. Easy to charge for the maintance men at work that work on small water coolers.

If you want to check out something that does'nt make as much noise as others and is more effecient energy wise you might want to consider these.
Click on chiller to see what I am talking about.

Like MyReef, I have CSL 1/3HP, noisy, generates a lot of heat, I couldn't live without it (at least my tank couldn't) it allows me to run the tank at +/- 0.5 deg 24hrs per day. Mine is also in the garage, but this is a serious consideration, they are a lot noisier than pumps and generate a lot of excess heat so consider where it is going. It's hard to say what size you need - it depends on a lot of environmental factors, but mine keeps around 300 gallons of water at 79 deg when the day and the room gets up to 100 - there is a time factor and other considerations here, but my guess is a 10 degree drop over a few hours.

I posted a reply, but it got lost. Anyway, I was wondering if there is anything we need to worry for putting a chiller outside? What if it rains?

) it is hot in texas and i have to have it. i keep it set at 78 with a 1 deg float (i may be bumping that up another deg soon). its very simple to use and took about 5 mins to setup. its kinda noisy and blows hot air out but i line in an apt so im stuck with it in my livingroom. anyhow its better than fans everywhere.
