I have a 200gal reef tank containing LR, DSB, corals and reef fish. I made the mistake of not listening to all you experienced reefers and I didn't get a DI/RO water filter thinking I was saving a few bucks.

Well, now I have a pain and have to deal with a bunch of stringy red algae and it seems to be spreading like wild fire.

I ordered a Tornado 4 stage RO/DI water filter last Friday but what can I do to get rid of the red algae I already have?

I'm worried and don't want this ugly red stuff taking over my beautiful reef.

Please, any advice is appreciated.

Do not worry too much,

After you add your RO/DI water the algae will lose it's nutrient source and it will die out! You will be OK!

If you have any more trouble let me know!

Hey there.... This is my first time on this forum.

I'm no expert, but my friends and I have been keeping aquarium stuff (fish, inverts, coral, etc...) for years and years and have seen "red slime algae" over and over again. The 2 biggest factors that we have found to get rid of the junk is RO water (mentioned above) and good protein skimming. I've got a 58 gal reef at home right now and, though I hate to say it, it gets a bit neglected in the summer sometimes. I noticed a bit of red slime growing in there about 2 months ago and immediately cleaned up and adjusted the skimmer. 2-3 weeks later, all gone!

In other words, I agree with switching to RO water, but a good clean tuned skimmer to match your tank is a must.

Hope that helps,
~Todd
