I know in the past we have had threads on who dives but as I was preparing to dive this weekend I started wondering how many landlubbers there are in this hobby. Not that it means a hill of beans in ability to keep a reef, just wondering?????

I've been in the Pacific just off the Baja Peninsula, a bunch of cool things going on there, but not really a reef.

I poked around Baja too, Mexican city of Puerto Penasco. There were some neat tidepools. Went to Dominican Republic when I was little, didn't make it much over my head but saw some Srgt. Majors. I do most of my snorkling inland or on Cape Cod. Funny thing is my mom learned how to dive and went on vacation to Bonaire years ago, but I'm the fish person in the family.

I am such a deprived individual. Never scuba-dived, never been to the tropics, have barely even snorkeled.

I grew up on the Big Island of Hawaii, I have always been near the ocean and to some degree need it. My Father loved Hawaii but when my Grandmther got ill and my Father moved back to Iowa to take care of her, he lost all desire to move back to Hawaii. Many Coastal regions have a lot of temporary residents and never develope the communities like my father missed about Iowa.

I would not say you have missed anything if you have close friends and family.

Although I have a friend who after absolutely refusing to shut up about how great St. Paul Minnesota was the whole time we served in the Air Force, Took one look at San Diego California and immediately got out of the service and has NO desire to ever live in St.Paul again. This also worth noting Dennis was a sure bet to doing a career in the military before seeing San Diega, You never Know

I have only once snorkled at Guam. Damn, the water is warm....Like a hot tub!! I wouldn't say that I am better than anyone that has never swam in the reefs, because I did not get very far from the surface as I cannot adjust the water pressure well and can only go down about 10 ft from the surface.......Bummer....

Eventhough I live in Southern Cal, I never swam in the water here.....Too damn cold.

You don't get much more land locked than an Albertan (Canadian) who has almost drowned twice in their life. I still think I will snorkel, if I can ever afford a vacation, because any extra money seems to bring another tank.

Perhaps if it was at my backdoor, I would leave it there ????

My wife and I did some snorkling down in CanCun a couple of years back. It was fantastic! I grew up on the coast of North Carolina and lived only three miles from the beach, so I've always been near the ocean.

Always wanted to, but "Jaws" scared the crap outta me

Hey, I was an impressionable kid at the time!

My wife and I want to go to the South Pacific in the next couple of years so I'll have to at least snorkle. If I can rent a water proof camera that'll be a plus.

We're going camping to Russian Gulch (Northern California)in 3 weeks with some friends that go abalone diving. They've invited me to free dive with them but given that in a wetsuit I will bear a striking resemblance to a FULLY MATURE male sea lion I think I'll pass!

I do have to admint I've thought about and doing a cold water tank with my own collected specimens.

I have been to the ocean but never in the ocean. I don't know how to swim. But the documentaries on Animal Planet and Discovery make it almost like being there.

Never been snorkeling, scuba-diving, etc, and have only been in the ocean a few times when I was young.

This sucks.

:)

I literally grew up on the ocean south of Boston just before you hit Cape Cod and I gotta tell you guys that have never seen the ocean, you don't know what your missing. My attraction to this hobby started 25 years ago when I would sit in the sand at the edge of the water line and dig and dig for hours, Everytime I thought I had seen it all I would dig up some new weird worm or crustation of some sort.. and the early summer months when there are billions of tiny shrimp and minos to chase around. Of course growing up on the ocean here in good old new england can also be pretty tramatic. Those good old Noreastor's can literally wash houses away, and you gotta love how that salt air will rust your new car in three years... Anyway, I think I would die if i was taken away from the shore.

I was fortunate enough to snorkel in Oahu while visiting my Daughter & Son-in-Law (military). It was an experience of a lifetime, especially for an aquarium nut. We went to Hunama (sp) bay which is actually a worn-down inactive volcano. Not much in the way of corals but tangs and other fish everywhere. I even stumbled into (literally) a giant set turtle. But really, to get a really good look, I had to come back to smalltown USA and visit my LFS

I snorkeled in the Caribbean when I was 13, but I wasn't into the hobby then and didn't appreciate it. I hope to go back in a few years now that I have the knowledge to identify critters and the prescription goggles to see them
icon_smile.gif
I will be more careful, though...I had the same experience as Johnny and swiped my leg against some kind of stinging coral at the top of a pile of rubble. The cuts and welts took well over a month to heal! It was a great experience, though...got circled by a 5' barracuda, which was kind of interesting...

lived ten minutes from the ocean in North Caolina for 3 years the closest I got to even swimming in the ocean was wading knee deep and seeing thirty or so jelly fish ( right after a huge storm) never went back to the beach.

this winter I plan to learn to scuba and next summer I am going to go to the Key's.

Wow! I live in SanFrancisco. If I'm at the beach, I'm swimming. I was in the water at the end of January! I went on vacation in Norway this summer and they thought I was nuts.

Other than that, snorkeled at Hanauma Bay.
