How often do you do water changes, and what percentage/gallonage of water do you change?

Looking for lots of responses.

I change about 20% of water in my 29 gallon tank every other weekend. I use a little Aquasafe w/ tap water to neutralize the chlorine and harsh metals before mixing the water w/ IO's Reef Crystals.

180 gallon tank, 29 gallon sump and 10 gallon refugium. Total water is about 200 gallons.

I change 25 gallons every two weeks. IO salt.

I'm there with Hippo. Nada on water chages in my 40g. However, I top off at least 5g per week. Does that count as a 5g water change per week?

I have always heard you should do a 25% change every month and that's what I normally plan in my maintaince. I have been concerned about the sudden change in water quality with once a month changes so on the tank I am in the process of setting up I will use a drip pump to remove and replace 1% per day. My understand is that these water changes are necessary to maintain trace elements.

Umm....I don't do many water changes either.
Top off...ok, maybe 15% of my water every month.

That's right damnhippo! If those fish wanted fresh saltwater they should'a thought of that before they let themselves be captured in the first place.

WOW--if we're also counting top-off for evaporation, that makes my water changes total 155 gallons per month on my 180! 50 gallons of actual changes and 3.5 gpd of evaporation.

Thank goodness I have an RO/DI unit!!!

Seriously, top-off doesn't necessarily count because the molecules of water that flee your tank through evaporation are identical to the water molecules you put back in. What we're concerned about is all the crud that gets left behind when water evaporates, to build up in your system...

Oh forgot to add....if counting the top off water, I make 90Gal a month = 60%.

2poor2reef, does that sound better to you now? J/K

I set my protein skimmer to collect a foam that is thinner than most of you. The resulting drop in salinity is replaced in my top off water with a low concentration of salt mix. This keeps my salinity stable and provides trace elements. I also change about 10 gallons every quarter on my 75 gallon system.
