Up until recently an elegance was the first hard coral I would put in a new reef tank. Mostly because they were just about bulletproof. Lately I haven't been able to keep one more than a couple of months. I am totally at a loss. I'm not getting another until someone figures out what happened and how to keep them (again).

Elegance corals used to be very hardy. It seems that for the last couple of years the animals that are imported do very poorly. Most of them don't last for more than a few months. I've not heard anyone come up with a real reason for this, but I've talked to many hobbyists and LFS owners who all agree that there is some problem with recent imports. It's a shame because IMHO these are some of the most beautiful corals that exist.

i agree with the above, i have had an elegance who has done great for the past nine months - and recently has started to shrink. all other corals and fishes are thriving. i too would like to hear some explanations of how to keep them happy. (if your lighting is strong enough) i've heard they prefer to be in the sand bed where they can spread out. i have moved mine high and low and can't seem to find where he is most happy

. any others have long term experience with them?

Looks like it's about had it. I'd pull it out and put it in a hospital tank with some tank water, gentle current (maybe just an airstone to circulate), and some gentle lighting and see if it recuperates. Otherwise, it looks like the mantle has separated from the base, and it's about to turn into decaying jelly and foul your tank.

Let me qualify this post by saying that I've never tried this, but it was a method recommended to me by someone on the RAMR NG that had the same experience you're having. He sent this to me for my information after I'd already lost an elegance.

Here's a link to the FAQ's page on Fenner's website where the email that was sent to me is posted. It's the second entry on the page.

If you think you're going to lose it, this might be worth a shot.
