Folks,

I am sorry about the Service Unavailable messages. Traffic to our website has SKY-ROCKETTED and the server is having trouble keeping up.

I can ASSURE you that we are taking action to get things back to their usual blazing speed...

In the meantime, if you get the message, anytime, just hit refresh till you can get in. If you post and get the message, you post will still go through, so no need to repost if you get the message.

As you can tell, we have all been VERY busy here with the launch of our magazine Advanced Aquarist.

Cheers
James Wiseman

Could you send out an email notification when this happens? I fell like I have better things to do right now than reading service temporaly unavailable messages everyday to see if it is working.

chris h, did you read any of the posts about this (I believe its up to 4 now). This isn't reefs.org's fault. Remember, this is totally free of charge, a service being brought to you by the slaves, woops, I ment, hardworking moderators over there. Plus, I'm sure a sudden influx of defectors from reefc are now here, with all the trouble their having on that site!

I am not blaming anyone, and I appreaciate all of the work that the people that run reefs.org do. Just asking if I can be notified when the problems are fixed.

I just came on the BB and it is 1:43 Am Central time. Almost ever request is being met with "service unavailable", including my first 3 attempts to read this thread. How many members are on right now? If it happens now how can it be an overload?

It is quite simple. 1:43am Central is still only 11:43 Pacific, so there are more people awake on the West Coast still. Our server is currently co-located, which means it shares space on the same server with other sites that don't neccessarily cater to the US, so they may be at peak time when you are browsing.

Hi James,

Sure it's a little annoying but you know it takes about 1 sec to hit refresh or at worst 2 seconds if I have to hit it twice. I don't mind. Pages and pics load very fast and the content is second to none. Keep up the great work.

Thanks,

Steve

There was an error at our webhost last evening where another user on our co-located server filled up the drive that reefs.org is on. I am fixing the damage that was done this morning, so service may be intermittent for a short while. We apologize for the inconvenience, and hope to have things running smmothly again shortly. In the meantime, feel free to browse the rest of reefs.org, as only the bulletin board will be down.

If you're curious what other sites are on the server you may try doing a reverse DNS lookup on the www.reefs.org IP address. Unless they're running seperate IPs for each site, you should get a few hits.

Well, as it turns out reefs.org is the only domain name associate with that IP, looks like they have multiple IP addresses. Ohh well, it was a thought.

I ran a reverse lookup on some of the IPs adjacent to reefs.org and here's what I've got. Odds are a few of these are on the same server. At the very least they're hosted by the same company.

Wouldn't this contribute to the problem by adding more traffic?

Chucker,
Thanks for your efforts to get the board back in sync. I know how frustrating it can be and hope the glitches get cleared up soon.
I sincerely appreciate what you and the other staff and volunteers of Reefs.org do for our hobby.

I stay logged on all the time. Would it help if those of us that stay logged on, logged off when we aren't using the board?

Steve, staying "logged in" really doesn't mean anything- it just means that you have the page sitting in your browser. What counts is actively accessing the page- clicking the refresh button, navigating through forums and threads, submitting replies, etc.

We've already begun to move portions of reefs.org to the new server, so bandwidth and processing time will be a non-issue very shortly.
