I blow my rocks off often. (he he that came out kinda funny). Anyway I use power heads that are top mount. The motor is not in the water (less heat). The motor sits on top of a piece of drilled plexi glass so I can twist, turn and tilt them in all directions. I have one in the front right and one in the left rear. Whenever I see any build up I direct them towards it and into the water column out the overflow etc. Works great for me takes literally seconds.

I had a huge issue with it as well. My solution was to wash all of the rocks with toothbrush and change my SS from crushed Oyster shell to Aragonite. This coupled with a extremly hungry Yellow Tang has cured my problems. All I have now is purple coraline alge and bright green alge that the tang munches on.

Rich, I'm an equal oppurtunity reefer. I've got hermits of both denominations.

Mouse...hehe...How do you tell if hermits are witches?
Build a bridge out of them?
(Python rules!)

My hermits don't float!!

would it hurt my tank to storm the rocks a couple times a day to unsettled the settled detrious? I am running a mechanical filter for a couple hours to try and remove some of the solids.

Only 'storm' it when running a mechanical filter, turn up your skimmer, and put a filter sock on your overflow.

why is that?

i turkey baster without one and have done the powerhead routine many times without a sock or filter.
maybe i am pushing the envelope, but i mix small areas of sand up often too keep things moving as well.

You need to export the ickies - if you don't you are just unsettling settled junk that is better left alone. In other words, if you don't export it, what is the point of unsettling it?

I did it once without exporting. Lost some corals because of it.

Don't know if you guys have tried this but I just hooked my water changing tube to the pwerhead and was able to blast away at the rock with very nice precision. :P

wow...olds thread.

Oh wait, thats your line.

I storm my tank with a baster whenever I think about it and am sitting there gaxing into it with out much thoughts lol. I have a filter sock full of filter floss that I put on the end of my drain pipe. I catch all the goodies in there and then rinse and repeat.
