Has anyone tried anything other than the maxi-jet 1200 with good results? or is the maxi-jet really the best option available? I have the rio 800 right now but want to swap it as the venturi is LOUD as can be and just isnt giving me bubbles in the chamber like i thought it would be. Also if I do end up going with the maxi-jet(which I prob will since its 15.00

do I need to get that turbo venturi kit for it?
Thanks

Yes, you need the venturi kit for the maxijet. That's the problem, there aren't that many powerheads designed to incorporate a venturi. That's my opinion anyway.

Mike, just so you won't be surprised. When I switched to a maxijet I did get better bubble action in the chamber, which is what I was after, but if anything the overall noise level was a little higher. Maybe it was the same, but it definitely wasn't quieter. The noise level does not bother me but since you mentioned it in your original post I didn't want you to think it would drop because of the switch. At least it didn't in my experience. I think the noise level is somewhat related to the amount of air you nmove through the venturi. You have to use a venturi to introduce the air bubbles into the skimmer so ther's no getting around that. A second benefit I noticed when I made the switch is that I got less bubbles escaping through the outlet back into the tank. That's my experience/opinion only.

thats the main reason I was going to upgrade was the noise level, I think Ill upgrade anyways since like you said it does produce more bubbles in the chamber...do you run a needle valve on the end of your venturi line then? That was the only tip I was given as far as quieting it down...but I assume by closing the needle valve to quiet it down I am also sacrificing some output in foam? I think actually there might be something wrong with my rio because sometimes it wont be very loud and then 10 minutes later I can hear it in my bedroom down the hall

Thanks for the heads up on the noise though!

No, I just use the muffler that came on the end of the venturi tubing on the original Rio 800RVT. What you say is interesting because I didn't think my Rio was that loud, just that the maxijet was as loud or a little louder. If your existing pump is defective and that is causing the noise then that's a different story. I could never hear either pump from more than 25 feet away in the same room.
