Search the boards for "Southdown" and you'll notice that it is one of the most talked about items. You'll also find that it's available regionally, mostly on the east coast. However, some people take trips to find the sand in other areas and bring it back to their region to sell or give to other reefers. I did see someone in the Denver area selling the stuff.

Hi guys and gals....I'm a newbie to reefing community. I have a 40G reef tank in which trying to establish a DSB. I've heard Southdown TPS can be found at Home Depot, but I've tried to locate this mysterious "Southdown TPS" at my local HD's with no success...in Colorado Springs, CO. I would rather pay $5 for sand and seed it, than pay $35 bucks for aragonite. Is it only be found on the east coast? If so, how can I get some or who can I contact?....somebody, HELP!!!

the elusive southdown! give it up and accept the cost of expensive sand in your reef. you can look forever and never find it. you can order from some online places but with the shipping it will cost the same.
On a good note, the company that sells southdown was just handed a nasty fine for being environmentally damaging. Feel good about not finding the southdown.

reeflover, Check out Reef central market place. I think there is a guy from Denver selling Southdown. I hope no one is offended by my reply.

I live in southwestern Connecticut and have three Home Depots w/i 15 minutes. All three have Southdown, at least 30 bags at each location. They are outside in the garden centers. Funny, when I called each said they did not have it.

You know, you don't HAVE to use aragonite to have a fully functional reef tank and DSB. I went to Walmart and bought plain old silica play sand for pennies on the aragonite dollar and my tank is doing great...

DontYouJustWish, your link didn't work. Is there a character missing? dbj, did you say "old silica play sand"? I thought this stuff couldn't be used. Is it the white sand or the brown-ish stuff, that looks like baby poo? Do you guys know if I can order the mystical southdown TPS from Home depot website? By the way, thanks for helping the newbie out!!!!!
