Weddings paid for and I am back on this great board and looking to do change somethings around and upgrade. My question is how close do guys/gals keep your live rock from the sides of your tanks and what are your reasons for keeping it a certain distance?

My rock is about 2/3 of the way back from the front glass, to provide swimming/viewing room in front. On the sides I've got enough space to get my hands in there and clean the glass. Then in back I've got a couple of inches of space between the rock and glass to allow for water circulation and prevent any dead spots.

I do the same thing as rBeOeBf. I am adding another 50+lbs to my tank in the near future and just want to make sure I can get my hands in the front of the tank and some room for circulation in the back.

From all that I have read, the concensus is to keep enough room in the back and sides to provide ample water circulation, 2-3" for me is about right. The distance from the front is about 1/3 the tank width, with the very base rock. Just leave enough room on the sides to clean the glass if you intend on cleaning it.

Thanks guys, great advice as usual. It seems from alot of the pictures that many are able to pack in alot more rock than myself. I have mine about three inches from the back currently but I am planning on moving it back another inch. I have not had any problems with dead spots yet, so I will see how it goes.
