I was moving a very large rock in my tank and the top portion I was holding broke off in my hand. Needless to say the only thing below the rock was my gorgeous blue Maxima clam. One of the sides is crushed pretty well, but I went to try and open the shell (just to see if he was alove) and he tightly closed. Is there anything that I can do to save him? Can clams recover on their own from events like this? Or is something like this certain death? And, if so, should I just remove him from the tank? I am really depressed that this happened, but what can I do to help him recover

I read a thread on here or Reefcentral.com were a guy had dropped a clam and then had good results repairing it with epoxy/fiberglass? Try searching on "clam repair" and you might find it.

Good luck

I believe that clams can repair their shells from within. In fact many creature with shells have repaired cracks from injuries and predators.
I would just leave him and hope for the best.

Bodine's right, they will patch themselves up from the inside. The only thing you can do is try to keep anyone looking for an easy meal out of the opening. If it's just crushed w/ no opening i would just leave it alone, if there's a hole, you may want to try to put an epoxy bandage over it. Good luck!

I read a posting on ReefCentral about about a derasa clam which was repaired using A LOT of super glue after he was dropped. Look in the Tridacna BB on ReefCentral.com. The poster was Jim Norris and the clam's name is Scar. Good luck w/ your clam.
