My hippo tang jumped out the back of my open hood today. I am feeling down, as it was quite healthy and had doubled in size. I will be "fencing" the back off with window screen netting this week to prevent future jumpers from making it out.

This is particularly hard for me sinc today i went to the fish store in Buckhead, Atlanta and was amazed to see 8" hippo tangs. I had no idea the got so big.

Man, bummer! I have never heard of that before. Those cute little critters can get over a foot. Sorry Ernie.

I don't think it has anything to do with overstocking. I had a Flame Angel do that a couple of years ago, and he was the only fish in the tank at that point. (And there was only about a 1"x3" hole in the back of the tank that was open.)

Oh No! I feel so bad for you. I know its just a fish but aawwwwhhh.
I just bought a tiny one (size of a quarter) and a person gets kinda attached!LOL
Although they can get 13" in the wild they don't usually get that in captivity. They grow slowly. One guy on reefcentral has had one for 11 years! He said it was a inch or two when he got it and is now 5"
The way to feel better is to go out and get another right away!

My Lawnmower jumped about a week ago... fortunately I was in the room and heard a "thump" as he hit the grandfather clock next to the tank! I scooped him up and plopped him back in and he's none the worse for the trip. I'd only been home a few minutes so timing was everything.

Good idea about the window screen material.

My coral beauty that seemed very happy in my reef tank for 3 years went carpet surfing when I went on vacation. I almost cried when I found its dried up carcass with caved in eyes on the floor.
Then I did something stupid and selfish to replace the dwarf angel. For my birthday, I went out and purchased a 1 1/2 inch emperor angel. It quickly grew to 4 1/2 inches in 7 months(no I am not joking). Then it began to be really noisy, and mysteriously contracted marine velvet and died, despite proper treatment for the disease, probably because it needed a much larger tank. I was planning to upgrade the tank size in a few months for the emperor.

i know how it feels. way back in my freshwater days, i had an elephant nose (not sure of exact name) that i absolutely adored. within 3 days, he jumped my tank. but he was stressed to begin with. in my "early years", i didn't know that much about fish yet. anyway, i woke up one morning and didn't see him in the tank. i had to call my husband (then my boyfriend) and ask him to come over to help me find my baby. i knew he was dead, but i couldn't even look. i made my hubby pick him up and take him away for me. i was heartbroken.

-Sorry Ernie I don't mean to steal your post here but wanted to address this point. The reason this tang only grew to 5" in 11 years was that the environement it was in was not conducive to keeping this fish. I am not sure what the cause of the stunting of this fish is, but it really makes no difference. The point is that this is not the sort of thing that consciences hobbiest should be promoting.

Sorry to hear that..............(you are not overstocking, are you?)

I have a yellow tang, maroon clown, two yellow damsels, one mandarin and one neon goby in a 180G. Do you think it is overstocked?

The other day I was at the sink cleaning dishes and I heard a funny sound coming from my tank. As I had recently messed around with the wiring on my hood, and I'm not an electrician, and I am the nervous type, I focused right in on the sound.

It was a kind of zappitty, zzzt sound.
Oh, I was thinking the whole tank was about to explode from some wild electrical charge going into the water. I carefully approached the tank to look for sparks, and to pinpoint the sounds.
To no surprise the sounds were coming from the bulbs. I was trying to figure what wiring got loose.

Then I saw a couple blue flashes, and figured those must be actinic sparks!

A second later I figured how stupid I was being.
My dumb electric blue damsel had jumped out of the water and was flapping between the glass and the bulbs. Musta been hot!

Anyway, I pushed the sucker back in the tank, and to this day the fish is fine.

Why the hell do they jump?

Sorry for you & the hippo, Ernie.

It sounds more like mine is overstocked compared to yours........

That is pretty sad...

I caught a jumper on my cheek once...it was a skunk clown. Weird, he bounced back into the tank (open). A long while later, and in a different tank,(more closed) that same skunk turned up on the carpet. And it was curled upwards and dry. That image still haunts me.

Sympathies Ernie. I still have one tank with a two-inch gap at the back I will now put some gutter mesh on.
