Oceanic does make a nice canopy you might want to take a look at.

The stain most commonly used for the cherry finish is Minwax Red Mahogany but you may want to call Oceanic and ask.

I would take a look at Oceanic's canopy also. I just bought a new Oceanic with stand and canopy and I'm very happy with it. On my first Oceanic I skipped on the canopy and built my own to match the Oceanic stand. It came out nice and looks like a matching set. But I'm really glad I bought the canopy with my new set up. It really wasn't that much extra expense when I figured in material costs and the time required to build one.

Just something to think about.

Thanks guys but the only problem is that the canopy will need to house a pair of Halides or HQIs and some VHOs. I don't think the Oceanic Canopies are tall enough to accomodate Halides. Also I have heard that either they don't make a 120g canopy or there are problems with the canopy??

I have to build a matching canopy for my Oceanic Cherry Oak Stand. Can anyone tell me what type of Oak Oceanic uses and what stain and type of polyurethane I should use to match the stand? Thanks! I was thinking of using ½ inch wood do you think it would be too much weight or a full size canopy made out of ½ Oak would be fine??

Oceanic and All Glass dont use oak. It is Ash. The stain that would come closest is Bombay Mahogany (MinWax). And yes you are right they dont make them tall enough for MH's. I build for my own company and have talked with them in the past.

They are plenty high for MH, they aren't 500 feet tall, but you can fit halides in them just like the AGA's. Contrary to popular belief you don't need MH bulbs that far off the water.

Tom are you sure they don't risk splashing if they are so close. Im not planning on making a really tall canopy but maybe 7 or 8 inches tall. Also if they are so close to the water they wont have the same coverage as if they were a little higher up. I still haven't decided if Im going 250HQI or 400 Halide ... do you think it would make a difference?? Thanks.

I don't think vp39 is right here. We deal with both, and we've custom built parts for these hoods (including color matching the cherry stain).

It's oak.

Oak WILL look different than ash, unless it is completely drowned in dark stain so that one cannot see the grain (essentially like painting it). If you have a digital camera, send me a well lit photo or two and I could tell you if you cabinet is oak or ash.

When you stain and poly this thing, I would highly recommend applying the same amount of stain and poly to the INSIDE of the canopy as the outside. Some people ignore the inside because no one will see it and, believe me, they pay the price. The canopy will be firewood in a few months. (I apologize if you already know the fundamentals of working wood. I figured better to say something than not to...).

As far as the 1/2 inch oak/ash weight. Your question depends solely on the canopy design. For the most part, 1/2 inch stock would be exactly what I would use. I have built many for the clients of my local LFS who buy 300 gal and up units for their offices/homes, etc.

Oh yeah, one last thing, I have used the Minwax Red Mahog stain. I would also bet that this is not the right stain (sorry, Mick!). But, different stains look different on different woods with different sanding techniques...they always come out a little different. If you want a close to perfect color match, you will need to test the stain on scrap wood that is prepped (sanded) the same way as your canopy, and then adjust it from there.

Good luck,

Just built my hood for a bowfront and used MinWax Bombay Mahogony. Used maple wood and it came out pretty close to the Cherry Maple cabinet that I have for the tank. Need to put two coats and sand after first coat for a dark and shinny appearance. Going with a 175W dual MH retro and the height is about 7" for the hood. Should be OK because there should be some overlap for a 36" length tank.

MattM what stain did you use? Im going to a high quality lumbar store later this week and hopefully I will be able to figure out which wood will work best with my setup. On my last tank 18" Cube I used 1/2 OAK and it was heavy as hell. I also had to learn the hard way because the wood started to crown after a week. I had to drill 4 4" screws in each side to prevent further crowning and add 3 layers of poly in addition to the one I already added. For this tank I am going to go poly crazy on the inside and use spray poly instead of brush (I don't care how the inside looks, just as long as its waterproof!!)
